One thing I like about the slower, baritone numbers on here is the fact that he just refuses to oversell them. That's something here never did before or since. Even the slower stuff since Riot Act (including the solo work), he tries to sell everything really, really hard. The baritone vocals he's done since than have always been far more Dramatic! than anything he did on Riot Act. There's this strange kind of confidence to those vocals, as weary and broken down as they sound. On All or None, for example, he doesn't feel the need to push it; he's confident that the song and the sound of his baritone will carry what he's expressing.

I'm almost drunk enough to set this thing to rights. Digster gets it. That's for sure. I'm on the brink of a Guided Tour of Riot Act thread.

I think they're great!
yeah, in a lot ways it's his best vocal performance. raw and genuine. sounds like a guy who has been weakened by coming out of a whirlwind of personal crises and is a little defeated, but is wise enough to know that there are better days ahead, but is quite happy to wallow and feel defeated for now.

It is easier to appreciate the RA vocals now then it was then.

There really isn't anything I dislike about Riot Act. But Ed's vocals are at the top of things I love about the album. I've never understood the frustration.

Just kidding.

No I think the middle songs just have a murky quality. I mentioned 'filler' tracks, but to me Riot Act, after LBC, feels like an entire album of nothing but 'filler' tracks until the end. nothing sticks. I do like TMW. You Are is pretty good. Also this must be PJ's worst album lyrically, especially I Am Mine, with intellectual Eddie all over it.

LBC referencing the Beatles bothers me for some reason. I just hate the lyrics on this whole album.

And Bushleaguer is on here so yeah.

You remind me of the kids in high school P.E. that were too cool to play the game. Just too cool for any lyrics that don't immediately jive with your close-minded preconceived notions of what's cool or not. Get over yourself.
