This was amazing. I should listen to the album.
Yea, I sat this one out for a while because Pitchfork et. al. had a big boner for it, and it often got called "yacht rock." Just sounded like something I would hate. But it's actually pretty awesome.
The whole album is actually pretty damn good if you ask me. Then again, I've always had a secret kink for a bit of yacht rock.

Top 5 so far:

1. Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
2. Yung Lean - Warlord
3. David Bowie - Blackstar
4. Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression
5. Jazz Cartier - Hotel Paranoia

I have a feeling this is going to be the best year for music in a long time.

1. Kanye West - TLOP
2. Animal Collective - Painting With
3. David Bowie - Blackstar (This might still go higher, I just didn't listen to it very often, yet)
4. Kendrick Lamar - Untitled Unmastered

I guess the year is...okay this far. There's nothing I really look forward to except for a new Radiohead album. Is there something exciting coming up?

There's a bunch of stuff I'm excited for, personally:

more Kanye
Kitty
White Lung
Babymetal
The Drones
possible Die Antwoord
possible Crowbar
possible Gojira
Mos Def
Raw Radar War
possible Dax Riggs (maybe?)
Melvins
Deftones

Plus I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of stuff I'm not remembering.

I have heard three albums so far this year:

1. David Bowie - Blackstar
2. RNDM - Ghost Riding
3. Lily & Madeleine - Keep It Together

All three are excellent.

No interest in the Iggy Pop record?

I haven't heard anything super great this year yet but that's not unusual for me, sometimes I feel as though I'd prefer to just wait til the mid-year and end-of-year lists come out and wade through stuff then. I'm still digesting the things I really loved from last year (most of which I only found out about via end-of-year lists) and going through the unexplored back catalogue of other bands/artists that I'm already a fan of.

Nothing about the Iggy Pop record compels me to check it out but maybe I'll give a song or two a listen soon and see if something sticks (I doubt it).

The only 2016 release I've heard that I expect to make my personal year end list is Shearwater's Jet Plane and Oxbow, which got a lot of play about a week straight. Nothing else has really grabbed me. Still discovering a lot of 2015 releases.

Though, I must admit, two tracks in and I'm strangely impressed by Rihanna's Anti. "James Joint" reminded me so much of a Stevie Wonder track.

That Cavern of Anti-matter album is pretty neat.

Other 2016 stuff I have so far enjoyed:

Bowie - Blackstar
Daughter - Not to Disappear
Eleanor Friedberger - New View
Field Music - Commontime (as mentioned above)
Shearwater - Jet Plane & Oxbow and
Sunflower Bean - Human Ceremony

Reasonably strong start to 2016 so far.

Kitty as in Kitty Pride? Nothing on that list for me. I forgot that PJ Harvey is coming out with a new one soon, so that's something. I also forgot that I really like that Shearwater album.

Yeah, she used to go by Kitty Pryde. I love her.

Huh, I thought no one took her seriously. I only remember the time when she got famous, though, and only know this song.

Does she make good music now?

It's early to be fretting too much about this stuff, but it's been a slower one so far compared to last year. At this point, if I'm remembering right, I've listened to three albums released this year: Tortoise, Animal Collective, and Yndi Halda. I like the Tortoise one well enough, but it's not an amazing record; the Animal Collective one is alright, but might be the first album of their's that my general response is fairly blase; and Yndi Halda is nice enough, but not very interesting.

Things should improve as the year goes on, though. I've got the new Sarah Neufeld on the way, and all of the songs I've heard from that are good, so I imagine it'll be pretty satisfying. I'm also pretty sure I'll pull the trigger on Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai, and I pledged for the British Theatre debut.

Now I'm just waiting for the inevitable announcements from Constellation Records who almost always put out the best stuff in a given year. They've taken off the first half of this year, though, so I'm in a bit of withdrawal at the moment.
