This was pretty much as ruddo predicted. It's a personal story against a monster backdrop (and there's an early Spielberg vibe to how we see some of them which was cool) - I think that's why I liked it. This isn't a genre I go for so downplaying those elements enabled them to backdrop the relationship story in interesting ways.

weirdly enough i watched this movie tonight and come on rm to see this thread made...i knew you guys had talked about it a bit here, and i probably didn't pay much attention to what was said...but this was different than what i expected, and i thought of lost in translation a few times while watching this
