My enjoyment of Alien3 has way more to do with the enjoyment of seeing the early hallmarks of Fincher's style than it does the movie's place within the Alien universe.
I fully understand why people put Alien and Aliens above it. Alien, especially, is probably the better movie. But Alien3 is my personal favorite. I get why Fincher disowns it. I get all the issues it had in development. But all of that stuff aside, I think it's just a really great movie. Easily ranks among the best "part 3's" of any series I can think of. Maybe Jedi is better?

I'd rather watch 4 again than 3. At least 4 has Ron Pearlman, Brad Dourif and Michael wincott.
