i hate pitchfork because the ability of other people to freely express their opinions draws people away from paying attention to me and challenges my alpha male status

I hope they are freely expressing their opinions, bc if they're getting paid for them I'll be pissed

I've always enjoyed Pitchfork's exhaustive end-of-year/decade album/song lists, and the website was crucial to my discovery of music in the early 2000s. Brent DiCrescenzo elicited an emotional response from me in the form of when he reviewed NYC Ghosts & Flowers, and his review of To the 5 Boroughs made me feel warm fuzzies about my own personal relationships with bands. Reviews that get a strong reaction from me are what I want from good music writing.
I read Consequence of Sound more regularly now, but I've got no reason to laugh at Pitchfork. The purple prose doesn't bother me one bit (surprise, surprise.) Hope they keep doing God's work.

I only ever read Pitchfork when I'm doing my end of year "find a bunch of albums to listen to for the next few months" research, or when they review an album I care about and I want to feel angry/smug for a bit.

i like that erlewine guy who writes for allmusic. all i want out of a music review is to know what it sounds like and if it's any good, and he's pretty good about getting to that without a lot of unnecessary bullshit.
Consequence of Sound is a lot better, I agree with that sentiment.
