that's entirely possible. I am not crazy about all of those songs (except for Johnny Guitar and maybe Get Right), but I also don't think PJ does irreverence very well. Maybe that reflects baggage I am bringing to the table

I think somewhere along the way the band felt they wanted simple and melodic and punchy and wanted to put there energy and craft in to these qualities get some songs like that. I for one like those songs and believe it takes alot of skill and artistry to make a song sound so tossed off, and they harken back to the great lost garage rock while still sounding fresh and doing some really cool things in those songs. I do get that some of them may not be the greatest pieces of art ever, but I've seen them get alot of underserved hate.
A rare beast, indeed: a Tuolumne post I'm in complete agreement with.

Why do the fans hate fun psychedelic songs like "Evacuation" and "In The Moonlight", and worship the boring crap songs like "Come Back" and "Unthought Known"?

i never really got "psychedelic" from these 2. evacuation is just sorta garage rock, and in the moonlight as a sorta metal/sludge sorta feel.
in fact im not sure pearl jam has many psychedelic songs. nothing as it seems maybe?

See, I disagree almost entirely (remove Johnny Guitar, I like that one). Those songs sound so much like they're trying too hard to go back to being "just a couple of guys playing a rock song." They feel contrived, and most of all, boring to me. What you are describing as "sounding tossed off" to me looks like a guy leaning against a light post, snapping his fingers, just trying to show how chill he really is. I don't hear any spontaneous fun in those songs. No "came out of a jam" feel. Honestly, the last song that really worked for me on that level from them was Down.

I've lurked around this board for periods of time going back longer than I'd care to admit, but finally felt it was time to register and comment on something after reading that line.
I have never seen the vast majority of Pearl Jam fans summed up so succinctly. Outstanding work.

Just as much as the two others are psychedelic.

Psychedelic doesn't necessarily mean lots of swooshy sound effects, guys.

I take psychedelic as either something that makes you feel trippy, floating, mind-altering stuff etc. or that sounds like whoever made it was high as fuck. I don't hear any of that on those songs.

That may be, but it
definitely doesn't mean chunky, circular guitar parts against closed-off, precise time signatures that trudge awkwardly ahead. On a musical level, a song like "In the Moonlight" is like the opposite of psychedelia to me. Maybe lyrically.

I don't think "Evacuation" sounds psychedelic at all, even a little bit.
"In The Moonlight" however has bits of psychedelia though (at least I think so). For example, the way Ed sings it, the chorus, and other parts of the songs are a little trippy. There are also weird little guitar noises going on. The 1:17 mark into the chorus is somewhat "trippy".
In someways I guess In The Moonlight is kinda like Evacuation with the clunkiness, but it has a trippy quality to it as well.

You Are has a lot of colliding chunky notes but seems to come off kind of trippy to me.

Is it your baggage or Pearl Jam's? For a long time Pearl Jam was a Very Serious rock band with a Very Serious front-man which has colored their legacy and how all new material is viewed, regardless of how and when they have evolved as people or musicians.
