But hey, at least if they trade him there's a chance he'll sign as a free agent since the Sox won't technically be trying to re-sign one of their own.

If you are Boston you can't run the risk of letting him walk and only getting a compensation pick. They should not have let it get this far and just locked him up last winter. Might as well trade him and get a mother load of prospects. The Mariners makes sense but he's from that area so maybe he'd wanna stay. If he's traded to Seattle though can probably get Taijuan Walker, DJ Petersen, Austin Wilson OR Gabriel Guerrero (Vlad's nephew) for Lester who has said he's open to resigning in Boston next year. All of that being said I don't understand why Boston just doesn't lock him up. Yes he is 30 but he is having one of his best years ever, is durable as fuck and is an animal in the postseason. How many guys are like that?

I don't think you get a Walker-level prospect for Lester. As good as he is, he's still a rental.

Amen...this ownership group blows, as fun as it was, the World Series run was just about the worst thing that could happen to the team from the perspective of what it did to their philosophy on building a team...

It's pretty obvious to me that they never had any intention of re-signing Lester. They might as well get something for him, but it's still stupid. I was kind of with them on this until I thought about it more and I realized that clay Buchholz will be their #1 next year.

If he wants to pitch close to home, I don't think two months of pitching there is going to make him more likely to do so.

Like almost every player of his age/ability to ever reach free agency, he'll go to the team that offers him the most money.

It's definitely a douche move... sort of like what Darren Oliver's agent tried to do a couple years ago by threatening retirement unless he got an increased salary. If you don't want to meet the terms of the contract, don't sign the contract that includes the clause.

Earning $15 million to throw 0 pitches? No problem.
Earning $0.5 million for one season to make up for it? UNACCEPTABLE!
