AP Style says it should be "QOTSA are better than Soundgarden."

But nobody gives a shit about AP Style anymore.

God knows I hate that goddamn Oxford comma. But for some reason I really like this rule. Hypocrites, aren't we all and all of that.

Look, I get the Oxford comma. It helps. I understand. But read some fucking Cormac McCarthy and you'll understand that a lot of outdated grammar rules are unnecessary if you know how to write. It's really the way people get militant ABOUT the Oxford comma that I find frustrating and that I goddamn hate so much. It's more that than the actual rule itself.

Cormac McCarthy is an awful writer. Your argument is terrible.

I don't get the Oxford comma renaissance at all.

One of these statements is absolutely true.

Is Cormac McCarthy the one who doesn't use quotation marks? I hated that.

This is the guy Joey is using to support his arguments about grammar. :shake:

I just think sentences look cleaner without. And I think it's easy to write clearly (most of the time) without it. But I think that's true of most punctuation.

I probably wouldn't bother to voice any resistance to at all of so many weren't so militant about the importance and correctness of it.

Progress is difficult, I know. But I believe you'll get there one day.

Common usage generally governs the evolution of this shit.

The Oxford comma seems to be a case where a vocal minority won out.

Not a fan of the Oxford comma either.

I understand that "Queens of the Stone Age is playing in my backyard tonight!" is arguably more correct in a technical sense but it sounds absurd and clunky. In the way we use band names in conversation, "are" feels more appropriate. I guess perhaps we conceptualise bands as a collective of individuals, not so much an entity in themselves? I don't know.

"Please bring me a pencil <pause> eraser and notebook" sounds stupid, and is possibly confusing. There is no debate to be had. the science is settled.

Yeah writing in a pause is absurdly confusing and absolutely does look stupid. No debate from me.
