See, now I think that would be a clumsy, awkward title.

The title is really starting to grow on me now but I agree, at first it just felt really awkward. So I've been thinking... What if they called it "Bolt of Lightning"? It would convey the same meaning. The artwork would still be relevant. It's a self-reference, which I always sort of enjoyed. And, most important of all, it's just a much more poetic phrase.... There's a reason Ed didn't sing "caught a lightning bolt, cursed the day he let it go".
It's worse.

The only reason Ed used 'bolt of lightning' and not 'lightning bolt' is that the first one fits the tune.

Hearsay!
He wasn't mature enough for "Lighting Bolt"

Why must they be so vague and patronising?
Well, that's probably all mike knows about it
If that's all he knows, then he knows nothing and should probably not say anything. All he's saying in these articles is "We're a band and we've made an album. Hopefully you'll like it." Does he think this is anticipation-building stuff?

I think Mike is incredibly inarticulate. I honestly believe he's doing the best he can.

For more on Mike McCready read the full feature on his role in supergroup Mad Season in issue 243 of Total Guitar.
It's not even from an interview about the album and its probably old/ from before he was allowed to say anything unvague about it.

I think it might be your dogged defense of the title which is part of the reason why I'm starting to come around to it. Props to you for helping us through these confusing times!

Sad times when a dislike of 'Bolt of Lightning' is interpreted as a defence of 'Lightning Bolt'!

It kinda seems like they are giving no hints as to the sound at all so it'll be a surprise.

I like that answer. It's not meant to be helpful. It's wry, sarcastic, and says 'I have no idea.'

I'd rather have either of these vague generic responses than the over the top nonsense they spit out about Backspacer.

They have a talent for that. For me, all it does is 1) make me think that the album can't be that interesting, or you'd want to tell me about it, and 2) make a subset of the fans unhappy when it drops, when if they'd said something about its tone beforehand, those opposed to it might've got used to the idea.

Having said that, 2) might lose them sales.

That was bad as well. This band is basically terrible at talking about their music.
