If you have a trusted contact in HR, you can ask things "off the record." But yeah, I agree you don't want to go running to the CHRO every time something happens.

If he doesn’t do something soon it could look as if he intended to keep it. Could still probably claim he was in the process of finding out if it is acceptable, but he may need to prove he dud reach out to someone in authority for what to do.

Does posting about it on RM count as reaching out to someone in authority?

my last job our HR department was by far the most hated. the specialist in charge of our benefits some how always found the best service for her step son, not the best and cheapest for us employees. the generalist who did the low level day to day stuff couldnt be bothered to do anything and did nothing but complain. the head of the department was a complete moron. she wanted me to open our email up to craigslist emails because she sold stuff on craigslist and wanted to get updates. anytime someone had a complaint she just stared at them like a deer in headlights and never did anything.

current job thankfully i have only had one interaction with them as a HR department (i initiated it) and it was quick and painless. otherwise she has just stopped by the office and chatted several times. while i always heard the HR is for the company and not the employee but i definitely see that they do take an interest in helping us out with any questions/problems we may have

also to add i wanted to give my coworker and former boss some money at christmas as appreciation for their help throughout the year and both turned it away before my hand was even extended

If you have a problem, don't go to HR. Go to your shop steward first

Thanks bro I appreciate the balanced take. I think most in my department are good about supporting the employee. I’ve had to reject more than a few actions our managers wanted to enact. More than a few heated discussions also, but always professional.

Direct managers are sometimes the hardest ones to deal with. And a lot of times you’re protecting both the company and the employee in a situation.
