It's nice to have this Eddie back

I'm certain it's "came down to destroy."

Haha. He’s a big PJ fan and has a popular YouTube channel breaking down songs.
For any guitarists out there curious about what’s happening with the guitars in DM check it out! He’s probably got it 90% correct already.

They might want to play this one early in the shows or Ed may struggle. It’s not a word salad but there are a fair number of different parts. Verse, sub verse, chorus, verse, sub verse, chorus, bridge verse, chorus. Add in too much wine and Matt speeding it up to 2 minutes, 45 seconds and it could be rough if played after say song 8 in a set.

2 more listens. I am not into the synthetic drum effect. When Matt tears in leading into Mike’s solo it is awesome, but his drums get squished in this synthetic echo thing I am not crazy about. That Stone “You Are” riff is the MVP.

Go down a half step if need be. Don’t rush it.

Do we not believe the Spin writer was given official lyrics?

I wonder if Matt ever speeds in the studio
SO MUCH of my lack of interest in seeing PJ play live anymore is how Matt has massacred so many groovy songs

based purely on metal door muffled sound i will predict wreckage as the next single. seems like a totally different more melodic song than DM.

He's not bad, but I've found the Let's Play All channel to be much more accurate. Just saying.....

I'm in the cautiously optimistic camp regarding this song. There's some things that I like about what they've got going on here: the energetic performance, Ed's more minimal approach to the vocals, some of the effects and textural elements used. Unfortunately, some of that gets neutered by the production, which is exactly what I was concerned would occur when the band first started talking about how they were working with Watt as their producer. Things are too neat and tidy in the overall structure of the thing, which is the antithesis of what I felt made Gigaton such a magical success.
On the whole, though, I think "Dark Matter," the song, hints that Dark Matter, the album, will, like Gigaton, play to many of the band's strengths in a way that Backspacer and Lightning Bolt did not. While I critiqued the the overarching song structure above, I still find several parts that ring true as the band being authentic to their core personality: the descending riff that first comes in around the 30 second mark, the drop to a single guitar, drums, and maybe a bit of bass around 1:15, and the bridge(?) around 2:20 that sets up the solo that carries us to the song's closing moments. Despite its flaws, I'm very eager to see what the rest of the record has in store, and quite pleased that I can still enjoy new material from these guys in 2024.
