Took me a while, but I'm loving "Is" right now.
Maybe not thrilled by "Time Waited" but it's the only one.

I don't know why I singled that one out, I don't dislike it either.
I suddenly really really liked all the rest.

It’s been a while since I’ve listened to it all the way through, but Z is such a fucking tight record. I’m gonna add it to my PlexAmp for later.

Struggled with the records since The Waterfall came out. After that I feel they've become more a support band for JJ's desire to be a soul singer.

Much of their self-titled record is focused on building to the MMJ cacophony climax that Z masters. Wasted, off The Waterfall II, is maybe the peak of that sound but much of the next album explores that. Is doesn’t attempt too much in the way of that, and plays with sonic textures in spots, but I don’t think even in generalities that this is the case. I think really the biggest post-Z crime is that they haven’t used the reverb on James’s voice that was a signature of their earlier sound. The band, I think, still sounds mostly great on their albums. I guess in graduating from recording albums in a grain silo that they didn’t want to explore those vocal effects again.

Perhaps, and that's fine. It's just that the records since don't have tracks on them that stick in the mind beyond an initial listen for that very reason. I can still listen to the non-notable early tracks from early records, even stuff from Circuitual and feel there's enough to warrant that 100th listen. I guess that's what I am missing.

I'll still see them every time they play London

Without generalizing too much, I would say as nearly every artist’s catalogue grows over the years that happens though. I mean, fast forward the Stones 25 years from their first album, and by the mid-80s, there’s a handful of memorable tracks but it is the exception over the rule.

saw 2 of 3 at Salt Shed, and yes still one of the best live bands around. Z was unbelievably great.

Glad to read this. I listened it "Is" twice and never put it back on. I still spin a lot of Waterfall II regularly and some songs from Self-Titled. The new didn't feel as good. I'll try again!

I listened to “is” once and—perhaps I’m exaggerating but it seemed this way—it seemed like the chorus of most songs were just the titles of the songs. Like, in a weird, obvious way that seemed lazy for some reason. I dunno, nothing since The Waterfall has really struck me, but I keep listening to things like bootlegs because they are still a great sounding band.

Still one of my favorite live bands. But their studio output is in decline. They (JJ) are too talented to really make a bad album. But 'S/t' and 'Is' are at the bottom tier for me.

But still I enjoyed 'Is' quite a bit lately. 'Beginning from the Ending' is a great tune.

The don't tour Europe alot anymore, but it seems they barely toured 'is' in the US and went straight to a 5th anniversary Z tour. Which seems really weird. Even they think their output is in decline

I liked Is and shelved it for a while, then recently came back to it. I really like it a lot. I don’t think they are in decline per se. I think it’s, for me, that the first few albums are so baked in my existence that it’s more unfair to new material to consider it mixed in with the rest. It’s as if everything post-Z belongs to the same but different band. It just feels like a different animal even if I do really love all their albums to this point.
