I'd maybe bump Life & Limb for Epic Problem

I'm really surprised that people don't but Amnesiac much higher. It's got some of their most unique songs ever, in Packt... and Spinning Plates; some of their hands-down best songs in Packt, Pyramid Song, I Might Be Wrong, and Knives Out; and I don't think there's a clunker in the bunch. I LOVE Pulk/Pull, but then I like Flying Lotus. I suppose most people wouldn't love that song if they didn't like the genre.

I agree... Amnesiac is a classic... but it's just so hard to rank these albums because they're all so unique. I've definitely had some phases where I could argue that Amnesiac was my favorite RH album

Thanks Trag, I can hear it on Apple Music though. I've given it a couple listens, and I think I'm going to sit on it a while. I'll be honest, right now all the excessive fawning and best-evers are clouding my judgment in a bad way. I generally try to block that stuff out when listening but for some reason with Radiohead it gets to me. Go figure.

Pretty much every Radiohead album since "Kid A" has arrived with some degree of hagiographic fanfare that I've found a little hard to swallow. I really like them, but there are times when it seems like they're one of those bands that somehow cause otherwise sensible and discerning people to completely lose their grip on their critical faculties. Over the years I've learned I enjoy their music more if I attempt to process it outside of all that ruckus.

You're totally right. I'm usually able to tune it all out, though. Probably because I didn't really care for Kid A when it dropped. It's easy for me to smile and wish others well and digest the albums on my own terms. That, and I have a good amount of friends who run just as extremely in the opposite direction and that's even more off-putting to me.

I can certainly relate to this. I had some skepticism when I first listened to IR and TKOL because of this. However, AMSP feels like a different type of album. It's more rewarding for the patient listener... unlike IR, which was sort of the king of "OMG, this is the greatest thing ever in the universe" hot takes.

"King of Limbs" is a bit of an exception (and perhaps why I have it ranked a bit higher than most others), but in general the trend of drooling hype over new Radiohead music is not in the least bit overstated.

I didn't see any reservations for HTTT. All the reactions I saw were "a new direction" "reinventing themselves again" "saving music" "best since Kid A".

If anything Amnesiac had a bit of drop too but only because so many insisted on calling it a b-side record. That has largely gone away now but at the time people said Kid A should have been two discs instead of split into two separate records. But that was the only real complaint.

I don't recall anyone saying Thief was a 'new direction.' If anything, it was the opposite; people viewed it as a retreat away from Kid A/Amensiac because God forbid they decided to use guitars. Which, listening to the record, is kind of a silly take on it, IMO; the songwriting is way closer to those records than The Bends. But I think it was definitely perceived in that fashion.

Oh yeah, I certainly wouldn't argue they're the most lauded band on their level. I guess it just doesn't really surprise me. There's not many bands operating on their level that have continued to make records many believe are some of the best they've done over the span of decades.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that wasn't my experience. I didn't encounter any of those criticisms/concerns. Everything I read, all the people I talked to, said it was so fucking brilliant that they found a way to do something totally groundbreaking and new yet again.
