Pretty much every Radiohead album since "Kid A" has arrived with some degree of hagiographic fanfare that I've found a little hard to swallow. I really like them, but there are times when it seems like they're one of those bands that somehow cause otherwise sensible and discerning people to completely lose their grip on their critical faculties. Over the years I've learned I enjoy their music more if I attempt to process it outside of all that ruckus.

If anything Amnesiac had a bit of drop too but only because so many insisted on calling it a b-side record. That has largely gone away now but at the time people said Kid A should have been two discs instead of split into two separate records. But that was the only real complaint.

"King of Limbs" is a bit of an exception (and perhaps why I have it ranked a bit higher than most others), but in general the trend of drooling hype over new Radiohead music is not in the least bit overstated.

I don't recall anyone saying Thief was a 'new direction.' If anything, it was the opposite; people viewed it as a retreat away from Kid A/Amensiac because God forbid they decided to use guitars. Which, listening to the record, is kind of a silly take on it, IMO; the songwriting is way closer to those records than The Bends. But I think it was definitely perceived in that fashion.
