he actually wrote it on guitar (like hummingbird), so i'd be interested in hearing how it originally sounded.

he auctions off a private, living-room show every year to benefit letters for santa. it's capped at 30 people, and each gets a request. after badgering him for like 6 years straight, i finally got him to play nothing up my sleeve (he refused to acknowledge the song existed for like the first 4 years).

so after the show on saturday i got to talk to jeff for a bit, making light of the fact that he once again skipped my request -- wanted by loose fur. he said that he doesn't quite know how to play that song, and that it's a jim o'rourke song that jim made him sing when they recorded it. this led into a broader conversation about loose fur. jeff said that they laid down tracks for the new loose fur album about 2 years ago when jeff was in japan. the process since has been excruciatingly deliberate, with jeff and jim trading ideas over email for the last 2 years. he said he's not sure when the album will be out -- said could be this year or in 5 years.
wilco also has a collaboration album coming out in january. he played one song from it (i can't remember what it was).

Nothing excites me more than two dudes grinding out an album via email over the course of several years. I bet it's a creative masterpiece.

What are “Cars Can’t Escape,” “Magazine Called Sunset,” or “One True Vine?”

Cars Can't Escape is THE Wilco B side. I'll also nominate Venus Stopped the Train.

Venus Stop the Train is my all-time favorite Jay Bennett contribution. Sadly, it's something they'll probably never release or play live. (and what Jay Bennett and Ed Burch did to it later doesn't count).

Is it Stop or Stopped?
Bennetts tunes really allowed Jeff to deliver the kind of vocal melodies that would get under your skin.
