I imagine that had to do more with the songs than the drummer. I don't think a lot of people went "so I heard Pearl Jam fired their drummer... welp, I'm out". My impression is that they started loosing fans with Vs.
Vs. sold a lot on what people expected it to be judging by 10. By Vitalogy they knew that band wasn't coming back and if they did have any hope left No Code got rid of that. I think that if they stuck with 10 or Vs. they would be reduced to a 3rd grade has been nostalgia act.
Pearl Jam's initial success was a mater of popularity. A huge part of records they sold with 10 and Vs was to people who bought them because up to 1994 they were the band you were supposed to be in.
It's silly to assume and people on this board often do that most of fans who were into PJ because of 10 have much in common with people who post regularly here in the sense that most posters here have an above average interest in music and are very articulate about different aspects of it.

The general publics fandom was in line with the grunge music culture fad, not Dave's drumming. By the time no code came out the public was onto the next music fad. Backstreet boys, spice girls and limp Bizkit.

Plus his general happy demeanour really didn't sit with my view of the band. Or theirs evidently:)

I also liked Pearl Jam, even when I was a kid, because they weren't nihilistic. I'm not sure if they were all 'happy', but none of them were Kurt Cobain. Pearl Jam's music was never hugely dark, and if it was, always with a sense of humour. And they always seemed really pleasant dudes in interview. Or rather, that was my impression. Ed was often smiling, smirking or laughing and doing that pouty thing with his lips.

I really like that they're dorky. And they really are. We all have our interests but its cool and I'm jealous that they're rich and get to indulge in theirs.

I can't get past the feeling of him whining his way trough every song and i can't stand whining/moaning and cry baby singers.

He suffered major depression, he wasn't whining. We're not talking trademark emo.

I think that's why he felt threatened by ed and manifested it in a dislike of pj.

at the time it was very important to take sides. I loved both bands, but you had to line up behind one of them.

But not when you are a misguided 8th grader full or hormones and emotional rage towards your parents for not having the pool heated in time for a saturday afternoon neighborhood party!

I was a fan of both bands but nirvana a good bit less, i don't think there were ever a top 5 band for me, but i also don't really remember people picking sides

I know but he emphasized that a lot or used it as a shield in his approach as a singer. I give him his merits though even if I've never been a fan. He was basically a genre of his own.

I relate totally to Stips point about having to pick sides at the time.
When the news broke of Kurts death, nirvana fans here gathered in the Phoenix park and burned pearl jam t shirts, chanting 'why couldn't it had been vedder'
