Cubs close to picking up Aroldis Chapman.

Who are they giving up?

Some SS prospect who's blocked by Russell/Baez.

I'm kind of torn. Should they give up their best prospect for a one year rental at a position they aren't even really that weak at? You could argue moving Rondon to setup would strengthen the bullpen significantly but how many times do closers adjust well to change? They are all mentally ill.

Plus he beats his wife.

His quotes about resigning with New York even if he gets traded were weird. He's really good and professional (on the field at least) but I can't shake the image of him longing for Brian Cashman's loving touch when he should be worried about closing a game 7.

I think when your starting SS is 22, your backup is 23, and your starting 2B is under contract for three more years, you can afford to give up someone like that more than a lot of other teams.

I like the fact dea of them getting Chapman, especially if that means he stays off of Washingtons roster.

Yeah. And I guess they have another middle infield prospect in the minors that is pretty decent. Warren was a total bust and the other minor league bat had a hairline fracture in his leg last year that is apparently still bothering him.

This is an interesting point. This year, the trade market is incredibly thin in terms of impact players that are likely to be "sold." So I guess with every overpay to obtain one, you are achieving two things- obtaining the player you want, and making the market even thinner for the other contenders to improve themselves.

Yeah, thats a really good example actually. Upgrading your team while denying your rivals as many options to do the same.

Yeah, and he's good enough that he lets them rest their regulars without taking a huge hit to the lineup. And the Padres are paying $17 million of the $22 million he's owed between this year and next, so it's a great bargain for the Jays. I expected them to give up more than their ~20th best prospect to get him for that cheap.

The Red Sox are in such a tough spot right now. Normally I'd be like "these asking prices are absurd lets just stand pat for better or worse" but with this being Ortiz's last year, they really need to go all in this year.

As long as the deal doesn't involve Betts/Boagarts/Moncada I say make it.
