Let’s remember that we heard nothing but positive and exciting things about Backspacer and Lightning Bolt, which ended up being an awful album and an ok at best album.

Very much looking forward to people talking about how good LB is in light of the new terrible thing.

I've had six years for it to change my mind. ST has gotten better, LB stayed the same, and that turd Backspacer has gotten worse. New album might be worse but backspacer will never get better

Stip made a point a while back about how the most recent album has to carry the weight of being the last album. And I think he's dead right. Maybe not you or numbers specifically, but a lot of other people have changed their opinions on Backspacer since LB came out. There are a ton of fans who think LB is way worse than Backspacer -- these same people said Backspacer was the worst album ever and now talk about how charming it is.

I expect the same of LB (on a large scale; again maybe not from you specifically) once/if a new album ever drops.

Any time a person forms an opinion that requires one of the following to be true in order to stand, they should recognize the glaring red flag.

“Lightning Bolt has some redeeming qualities.”

“JJ Abrams demonstrated storytelling craft.”

“In 2019, Rudy Giuliani outsmarted a person/dog/email chain/Apple TV.”

Do you really think that's what's happening with Backspacer? Because I'd like to call your attention to the album ranking thread. Ever since Lightning Bolt's release, Backspacer has remained largely in the bottom two spots

what durden's saying is true. and not just of pj, of everything. look at the recent star war trilogy - it's happening now. a reappraisal and recontextualization is inevitable with whatever pj puts out next.

My opinion on Backspacer has definitely gotten worse and worse as time has gone on, but my opinion of LB as “ok, it’s better than Backspacer at least” hasn’t changed since the day it came out.
