In RotJ, Luke was sacrificing his life for the small chance he could save his father. I don't believe the same person would then even for a second think about murdering his nephew in his sleep because he sees darkness in him. Even if I could be convinced the Dark Side is just that powerful, no way Luke just runs and hides, waiting to die in peace he doesn't deserve. He would spend his remaining days trying to right his wrong, trying to save his sister's son. Did he really have much of a sarcastic sense of humor? Because he called lightsabers lazerswords? I didn't really catch much sarcasm or humor from him. Don't think he was on Ach-To for that long. Kylo's a teenager in the flashback, which means it's been maybe 15 years at the most since that day, and I doubt he just said "whelp, fuck it, I'm out" right from the get go. His actions led to exactly the opposite of what he was trying to accomplish. He feels he can do no more good, he fucked shit up trying to do the Jedi Master thing, has 0 help from any other living Jedi, knows there's no saving Kylo after what happened and how deep Kylo is in the darkside already, can't do much as a single person against the entire First Order, no matter how strong he is. Anything he tries to do would just jeopardize the mission anyway.

I think it's definitely the most spectacular self sacrifice. The impact was incredibly devastating. I think it was a combination of this, and the way it was shot, ensured this scene had major emotional impact. 'Less is more' applies greatly here, where no massive sound effects were required. Deafening silence.

If not, then it’s pretty close to the top. I wish there was more urgency behind it. Saving more of a Resistance fleet than like 40 people.
But visually it is stunning.

Just got back from seeing this and I got say I am pretty disappointed. This was the most excited I have been to see a movie in a long time and certainly did not live up to my expectations.
Just perusing thorough the thread so far I feel my thoughts are close to VG and Anders.

Luke has always been a whiny bitch and I can fully understand him shutting himself off with some Ryan Adams albums for a good mope.
I’m also glad that Luke as a fifty year old wasn’t in an actual lightsaber battle with a twenty five year old, shown to be kicking ass after years of just guzzling sea donkey juice and eating fish pie. Now that would have been far sadder to watch and harder to believe.

I like Hux’s journey from giving a hate speech at a Nazi rally and killing millions of people to being exposed as a spineless whiny bitch a few days later in TLJ. And full tilt on the Peter principle. He’s in a role he has no competency or qualifications for but propped up by better able underlings who are all too aware of his short comings. The dreadnought commander was awesome wish we got more of him.
They’ve done well with him. And it backs up kylos view of him and helps add to us later being able to root for kylo.

The entire throne room scene from Snoke and Rey to killing Snoke into the battle with the praetorian guards to kylo and Rey together after might well be the best sequence or series of sequences in all Star Wars. The fight especially is just beautiful. The slo mo was a shock at first and a first in Star Wars but it works so well. It’s such a visual treat. Every shot judged to perfection.
