Republicans rely on a powerful infrastructure of megadonors and business supports, which have been getting entirely different promises over the years than what the public gets. That was the power of values/culture wars spin...it kept people supporting legislation that wasn't always in their best interest (something the democrats are terrible at achieving).

So now the culture wars talk is out of their control and being turned against them, the donors want their promised cuts, and there's no good option. They CAN'T NOT pass tax policies favoring corporations and the rich, but they know tax cuts for the middle class would do a lot to restore their electability.

Hence the urge to undo health care...all that saved money could have given them more room to cut taxes, and get the best of both worlds. They just didn't realize that a lot of their voters secretly (or unknowingly) appreciated the ACA, and it all blew up in their faces.

I just remembered that the Dem's got smoked in most Mid-term elections and Obama was still elected.
