Do you really think that's what's happening with Backspacer? Because I'd like to call your attention to the album ranking thread. Ever since Lightning Bolt's release, Backspacer has remained largely in the bottom two spots
I don't recall ever saying anyone except maybe Stip thinks the album is better than the bottom 2 spots.
I'm saying opinions seem to have remained pretty consistent. Who is talking about "how good Backspacer is in light of the new terrible thing"?
i know for me LB changed the way i looked at backspacer in retrospect. it didn't vastly change my opinion of it, but gave me a different insight into what i like and don't like about it.

McP has spoken of this well.
This is a better way to put it. But yeah. Stip had a great post about how the final (meaning most recent) thing in an artist's career, especially in a long career, bares the burden of having to carry the weight of the entire legacy. So when that thing isn't as good as the thing before it, we react like in kind. We react like it's the end of the world.

As soon as Backspacer was no longer the last thing, it no longer needed to carry the weight of the legacy. As such opinions lightened. People looked at it with a fresh perspective. I'm not saying the album became suddenly GREAT to people. But we were able to focus more on the strengths and enjoy it as something other than the final word from a formally great band that means a lot to us.
No. When LB came out and was better than Backspacer, it exposed that turd even more
Fruitless endeavor, comparing turd to turd is.

I won't lose my virginity to the next album, but I'll still like it.

It's probably not scientifically empirical. My memory is that when Backspacer came out virtually everyone said it was terrible with no redeeming value, the end of Pearl Jam, etc. LB came out and now those same people say things like, "at least Backspacer is fun" "it has some great songs" "it's a nice late-career statement" blah blah blah.

How bad the general fanbase thinks Backspacer is has been adjusted by "the new bad thing;" Lightning Bolt.
This happens for Pearl Jam since the release of No Code. It got very big with Binaural too...people hated it.
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.

LB being better than Backspacer should give us hope. I'm hopeful. But I can't deny me...if only I could. We'll always have those 11 years.

BS was a much more successful album in terms of focus. Sure you may not like the songs but the whole had a focus.

LB is a scatter shot of shite.

Give me ten focused projects over a fight to get it back again PJ carbon copy shitfest like LB.

If Ed truly played a new Pearl Jam album to friends, I’m surprised there hasn’t been more information leaks.
