It looked like absolute shit on our 4K tv. How do we calibrate?

I've got the 75" Samsung Q9F model (supposedly their flagship 4K TV), thought I had mine calibrated nicely and never really had an issue until I saw last night's episode, felt like I was squinting and trying to figure out what I was watching for over half the episode. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one having this issue, it's all over the recap news feeds this morning....

Yeah, it seemed completely intentional to me as well. The battle was at night, there's smoke, snow, ash, etc. It got a bit tiresome though.

Melisandre was the star of this episode.

On our 4k, I went back to the scenes in the previous episode where Jamie was in the hall with Dany and Sansa and then adjust the brightness/contrast/RGB levels until I could see enough shadow detail without the shadows appearing blue. This is the first time I've had to do anything like this on the 4k as Sony's "Cinema Pro" is pretty good out of the box, but the difference between that and what we saw on the much lower contrast projector was huge.

I assume this was to save money

My TV is like 7 or 8 years old, and is a Black Friday model at that (so not top-of-the-line even when it was released), and I've never really had much trouble with anything until about a few months ago when we ditched cable and started streaming everything. I first noticed it with True Detective, where it couldn't pick up the darks at all, and last night's episode was definitely the nadir: if something wasn't lit, it was mostly just grey and blocky. Took some power out of the Dothraki's charge, because as the lights started to get snuffed out, the sky above was very distracting.

It was very intentionally made that dark.

I don’t as a battle. At night time. The whole idea was to create terror and suspense.

My post wasn't a criticism about it being dark--I'm fine with it being dark, I'm fine with some features of the enemy's army and tactics being shrouded in an episode titled "The Long Night." It's just tough to watch on an older TV, especially if you're streaming.

The HBO Now app cast to my TV has a substantially better picture quality than my old cable. Better than the Playstation app too.

That episode probably was too dark on the screen, but I really enjoyed the way it benefited the Dothraki death scene. That was my favorite moment of the episode.

The lighting up of the Dothraki swords was pretty cool. Right before I asked Mrs. Bam “are their swords made of dragon glass? I don’t think so. They’re gonna be worthless.”

Anyway WhyTF didn’t the two good dragons sweep over the zombie lines and burn ‘em all before either side charged?

Very convenient that nearly all our heroes survived...

Jon's plan was to hide the Dragons until the battle was underway and the night king was spotted.

The Night King has mad spear throwing skills.

I get why people are upset the Night King went out so easily, but I'm really glad Arya's multiple season arc with the Faceless Men finally paid off.
