My girlfriend wanted me to really understand the Dune movies so she gave me a 45 minute deep lore explanation of everything that happens around the Dune novels. The Butlerian Jihad, the AI wars, the spacing guild navigators, a bunch of shit I've already forgotten. Then she showed me Dune part 1, where literally nothing of what she explained was referenced or touched on. I thought maybe in part 2 it would be but nope. She filled me with a bunch of useless lore that I didn't even need to understand the movies!
Anyway, I found part 1 okay but kind of tedious. Part 2 was a lot more focused, entertaining, and thematically developed; I enjoyed it as a treatise on the nature of power and its different forms. Very cool. I will never watch these movies again

Unreal.

What's worse is she had already seen BOTH movies and so she knew that none of this extended lore played into it. She's a Dune superfan and it's cute. I'd never been on the receiving end of the "explaining things to an uninterested party" meme before.

I would love for someone to explain all that shit to me.
But I did watch the David Lynch version, which is almost the same thing since every single line of dialogue is exposition.

There’s a guy named Frank Herbert that explained it all perfectly if you want to check it out

Is he hot? Will he sit next to me on the couch while he explains it?
(I do own the book, and one of these years I will actually read it. My first attempt was not successful)

The Dune movies greatly benefit from the timing of their releases. They're the kind of action/sci-fi/fantasy movies we needed in this dire era of Disney superhero fatigue. But I admit they are not for everyone, and they're far from perfect. I happen to love them.

Upon this latest rewatch, I have decided Zendaya is the weak link in this cast. I wonder if she was a political choice. Imagining how much better this could have been with a better actress in that role.

she's pretty and charming, but she doesn't display depth or range
timothee shows depth and range

Also, I think the ending was too rushed. All the off-screen, referenced great houses should have more of a presence in the movie, as they play such an important role in the plot. Would have preferred these movies as a long running mini-series instead, while maintaining the movies' production values. (I know that's a completely unrealistic ask). So many hurried-over details could be fleshed out so much more. But I'm very grateful for what the movies do well.

Maybe it's her expression of anger and disappointment. Came off very childish and pouty to me.
