here's my interpretation:

a lot of people are saying this is a movie about grief with a weird let-down of an ending, but I don't really think this is just about grief, I think it's about (the fantasy of) redemption, which makes sense of the title and a lot of the imagery, as well as that "jarring" change of tone at the end

I think the message (question?) is, "what if aliens were interested in our personal morality? what if the invasion took hold not through some big explosion-filled world event but through their exploitation of our personal guilt? we've seen aliens take our memory (Men in Black), what if they took our guilt, our sin, our responsibility as well?" that is what I took from that tonal shift and that almost obliviously happy dancing at the end; the aliens made everything as if none of it ever happened, but not through a miracle or through spiritual redemption, through a night of terror and violence, where the protagonist has to come face to face not only with what she's done but who she is (her doppelganger)

this to me was a spiritual parable with aliens

Just watched this and loved it as well. I like your interpretation. I think that’s pretty much how I saw it, too, but you articulated it nicely.

A movie like this would not work at all without a compelling lead performance, and Kaitlyn Dever was terrific.

The CGI was a little iffy, but it didn’t really matter.

Before assigned seats at movies was a thing here in the states, I saw the second Harry Potter movie in Madrid in an assigned seat, and the dude next to me nose-whistled the whole time. Fuuuuucking sucked.

I did watch Sopranos. He was a heavy breather for sure, but there was also dialogue.

yep, I think this is a good example of the fact that good ideas matter more than perfect CGI; it wasn't always super scary, but it was always uncanny and weird and that's what matters more with aliens I think

Now I gotta watch this movie.

Ok, finally saw this. Should be called “No One Else Will Save You”. I think it’s about forgiving yourself, which isn’t necessarily redemption but isn’t grief (except maybe in the Mike Flanagan sense) either.

The death of the first alien was clearly an allegory to her killing her childhood friend and the battle to survive was her internal fight to accept what she has done as a prerequisite to be accepted back into society. You could see it played out as she encountered various elements of her community that treated her like an alien invader. The absence of dialogue was a creative way to keep the experience localized to her and her inner war while the actual end of the world plays out around her.

I think the final scene was metaphorically self acceptance and allowing herself to be happy while simultaneously acknowledging that she will always be different,

Plot aside, it was exciting for most of it. The relentless pacing is what more movies like this need. I had no issues with the CGI and thought their movements and posing behavior were eerily cool.

Compared to the 2022, this year is shit in terms of horror.

Just from the start, 2022 had X and a more stronger rendition of Scream. Then Barbarian, Nope which was great, Pearl, Smile, Prey, the Hellraiser remake, Men, Resurrection, Huesera, Manticore, Project Wolf Hunting, Halloween Ends, which everybody hate but I love, that Marvel werewolf movie with Gael Garcia, Moon Knight and Dr Strange 2, Bones and All, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Terrifier 2, Deadstream, Hatching, You Wont Be Alone, Fresh, Speak No Evil, Skinamarink and The Outwaters. And even though I didnt loved it, Crimes of the Future, which gave us amazing visual and concepts.

2022 was a really really excellent year for horror.

Against my better judgement I think I'm going to see the new Exorcist this weekend. I enjoyed the new Halloween trilogy, so maybe I have bad enough taste to enjoy this too.

yeah, im going too. Everyone seems to hate it, which could be actually a good thing.

I count at least three of those movies as 2023 (Skinamarink, The Outwaters, Huesera), all of them great

me and my partner are currently watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind; they haven't seen it before, I've seen it hundreds of times but DEAR DAMN LORD it's not lost a single bit of its effectiveness

Totally Killer was fun. Kiernan Shipka looks like an old Emma Watson even though she's ten years younger.

We watched Barbarian last night. I understand it is well thought of around here but it might be one of worst movies I've watched in a long time.
