There were many excellent picks this tournament. We’ve done the 80s proud. But one song truly defined the era. One song WAS the 1980s.

In a lot of ways, the previous 95 selections were building up to this moment. We told the story of the 1980s in these songs. But this, my friends, is what will be playing during the credits.

you may have had to have actually lived through the 80s to understand that pick. But if you did, you'd understand.

I had a friend in 7th grade who had copied that song over and over until he had a 90 minute version to fill a cassette tape.

It was between this, Pump Up the Jam by M/A/R/R/S, Sit Down by James, and Rip It Up by Orange Juice. I probably chose poorly, but fuck it...

Now, I know, I know. But this song, I firmly believe could bring about world peace. Everywhere I've been in the entire world, when this song comes on, everyone in the place starts dancing and singing and clapping hands. I've made a million bar friends to this song. Sure it's cheesy as all fuck. But it's got that special something. I have more great memories soundtracked by this song than almost any other.
stop it joey
I... I had to, Pete.

speaking of sinead o'conner, did you ever hear the song she did with James? It's really good.

It was. It was re-released in 1991, but the original was 1989. It was also 8 minutes long and had different lyrics.

Don't listen to him, Joey. Chud thinks the fact that he owns a few beastie boys records means he UNDERSTANDS the 80s.

Wow. I never heard that one. And James is a top 10 band of mine.

It was a b-side from the Millionaires record, which you would adore.

it has its charms. I think the later version is much tighter. But Sit Down is also not a favorite of mine.

Assuming we finish tonight I'll set the brackets up tomorrow and put the dates in. I may need a volunteer to actually run it, though (tally the results, set up the new matches). I'm going to be away for 10 days without reliable internet access (and what I do get will be on a phone). I can't do the huge roster cut and pastes.
