I've thought this for a long time. Riot Act has better lyrics and better production (Ed's phoned-in vocals aside), but S/T has more energy and is more cohesive as an album. It's a shame they shelved some of the songs from that era that leaked a couple years ago, because that would have made S/T a much better album.

S/T is better than Riot Act and Ten.

Man, I'm sorry to disappoint you S/T haters, but it has also aged better for me than Riot Act. I still love Riot Act, but I love me some Avocado.

I'm actually the reverse. I thought Avocado was way better upon its release. My appreciation for Riot Act has grown leaps and bounds since then. I probably prefer it to Avocado now.

Me too.
I was a big fan of ST when it came out. It was my first "new" Pearl Jam album as a fan.

As simply a collection of songs, S/T is better than Riot Act. There are more tunes on S/T that I want to hear played live.
As an album that you can listen through and enjoy, Riot Act is way, way better. Riot Act is beautifully recorded, where the studio versions add to the songs. Quite the opposite for S/T.

The songwriting, production, and performances on Avocado are not even in the same league as Riot Act, you imbeciles.

Riot Act is like watching the last remnants of a once great ship sinking.

I can't wait for 2020 when all the RMers have come BACK around Riot Act again and treat it with the reverence and awe that it deserves.

I've defended Avocado many times around here, but there's no way I'll ever say it's better than Riot Act.

Production - well, of course.
That said, both albums were recorded in the same studio by the same producer - I wager that it's a mastering problem, not a recording problem. Fingers crossed for a sympathetic remaster one day.
