Behind The Sun: The Official RHCP Thread.

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

im exited for the new album, but im not expecting to blow my mind like BSSM or Californication did.

I hope its better and more consistent than By The Way at least. And have more teeth.

well, i was expecting another thing i guess...its too poppy and long for me. I would say its their most accesible album, and while there are some good songs there its not what i love the most about the band.

Also, the guitars sounded thin, almost no solos, no funk...i get that they were really going into a different phase but its not an album i need to listen to.

The same with SA, i was happy they were kinda getting back to the solos and funk, but i cant really listen to it for some reason. Feels phoned in, kinda desperate to be as mainstream and bland as they can.

New song kind of snoozy.

I liked Poster Child, but we're batting 1/3 so far.

I tend to prefer looser, funkier, harder-edged RHCP; not so keen on the drippy melodic ballads that seemed to take precedence in the 00s.

BSSM & OHM came out when we were young, and I think it's easy to love music at that age, but of the later albums, By The Way is probably my favorite. Stadium... has a lot of good stuff, too, but I'm not sure there's enough for a double album. I know it's not a popular opinion, but Californication isn't one I liked as much. I know it's good, but I just prefer BTW and much of the next one.

I'm somewhat close to this. By the Way has been my favorite RHCP album pretty much since it came out, and it (along with a great deal of burnout/overexposure) more or less rendered Californication obsolete for me. That's not a knock against it, I just never found myself reaching for it once By the Way was on the shelf next to it.

By the time Stadium Arcadium came out my enthusiasm for them had waned considerably, and I didn't care for any of the singles, so that was pretty much where I got off the bus.

These days, if I'm going to listen to RHCP (a rare occasion, but it happens), it's going to be one of two albums: By the Way (for mellow California RHCP vibes), or One Hot Minute (for dark hard-edged funk, and sweet childhood nostalgia).

I don’t listen to RHCP as much either but I lean towards Mothers Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik the most by far.

That would be my ranking aswell... Maybe Id put Freaky Styley a bit lower..

Also, the autotune on that new track is really noticeable...

The Irish accent song is comically terrible, haven’t taken the time to listen to anything else. I would rank their albums One Hot Minute, By the Way, BSSM, uplift mofo, Californication, Mother’s Milk, and the rest is a bunch of bleh.

At some point…I mean I know the earlier stuff and middle period pretty well, and heard the new stuff but not enough to fully comment.

Mother’s Milk is a transition album between the amateurish thrashy pre-Hillel dying stuff and the more polished later albums, I think if you like BSSM you won’t hate that one. Uplift has some really good stuff too, Behind the Sun in particular
