Oh my god did you even watch the movie. The entire rebellion wasn’t destroyed. and they sent a signal out at the end of last Jedi. Then they arrived when the resistance figured out how to defeat the million flying Death Stars and sent the signal out.

Also within the year time frame Poe and his squadrons were roaming the galaxy finding people to join them

We've already discussed it but I thought it worked better than it had any right too.

And her death, I thought, was incredibly impactful. I thought it was pretty masterful.

What about it didn't work for you? The dialogue aside, which I don't necessarily disagree with you about.

Guys, that final shot on Tatooine with that score is the most perfect thing ever and needs to be mentioned more

Overall I enjoyed the movie more than I expected to having read all of the leaks like 2 months ago and thinking it sounded horrible. It still has a lot of problems:

1) the crawl is actually terrible
2) more explanation needed on Palpatine and Snoke
3) how does Luke's Xwing still function
4) klaud
5) mary sue Rey has all the powers
6) oil painting ghost vision of the Skywalker siblings,

but given the fact that Carrie Fisher died in between films, Rian Johnson wrote TLJ before TFA was even done, it left JJ with a lot of cleanup to do in 2 and a half hours. If anything it should have been two movies.

Star Wars suffers from a lack of creativity in protagonist/antagonist set up after 9 movies. The formula is worn out, and I hope whatever is next in the future expands the concepts of why there is conflict in the galaxy and where it comes from. The Jedi / Sith rehash brings this movie down because it is all too obvious how it is going to end. The similarities in character and theme to the OT are a nice bit of nostalgia but propel the franchise nowhere.

Make no mistake: the movie is deeply flawed but the biggest problem during viewing 1 was the pace. That was alleviated in viewing 2 because I knew what was going on.

Carrie’s cocaine habit likely derailed some of the core emotional beats they wanted to cover. I think they did as well as they possibly could without going the CG route.

The opening they chose still doesn’t feel right because they shoehorned Palpatine in with the only groundwork being the opening crawl. And if they had to, I thought a pause after the end of the crawl followed by hearing Palpatine’s “The dead speak!” transmission before panning down to the planet would have been a more effective intro.

This would have been the fan service moment to end all fan service moments (which are almost always problematic) but I would have loved to see all of the force ghosts at the end helping Rey get up instead of just the voices. Or even one of them literally helping her up. And to really go for it, have the ghosts hold off Palpy’s royal guards while Rey goes toe to toe with him. It would probably have been a cheesy mess but I’d like to see that alternate reality where it’s the choice they made.

Also, they apparently filmed a crap-ton of stuff with Hayden Christensen training Rey? Probably the right choice not to use it if true. Would have made no sense.

Also: are we supposed to think Palps is a clone or the original? His face looked unmelted compared to his last appearance but his mangled hands and lack of lower body (I’m assuming) has me thinking this is the original guy who was thrown down the Death Star pit.

I though Leia was perfect in this, and a lot better than I was expecting. She played a vital role as well.

Perhaps their cloning tech is only capable of creating mangled versions of the originals (see: Snoke).

She and Ben died the same way Luke did: they’d exhausted the last of their life/Force energy by using the Force in extreme ways.

Is it called The Rise Of Skywalker because:

1. Luke Skywalker rises as a force ghost?
2. Because Ben sheds Kylo Ren, and rises as a Skywalker (Palpatine says Ben is the last Skywalker)?
3. Because Rey rises when she is brought back to life by Ben, and then ends the movie as Rey Skywalker?
