Have we posted this? Because it's great!

And by "great," I mean "horrifying."

Kelly Balmes is finishing up a master's degree — on her way to a Ph.D. — in atmosphere and sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Balmes, 24, is from Chicago, so her out-of-state tuition is $30,000 a year. It's paid for through grants; money she never sees.

The university pays her a yearly stipend of about $30,000 in exchange for her work in research and as a teaching assistant. That's considered minimum wage in Seattle — about $15 an hour.

In 2016, she paid income taxes on her teaching stipend and ended up owing the government $2,334.

If the tax bill passes, the grant that covers tuition will be viewed as additional income. If the numbers remain the same, Balmes' total income before deductions becomes $61,398 — nearly double what she filed last year.

She would owe $7,488, about $5,000 more.
I agree this is a bad thing, but this example is kinda disingenuous. It's taking a worse case scenario, out of state and fully funded by tax eligible money, then comparing a post-deduction obligation with a pre-deduction obligation. The schools could possibly set up some kind of notional intermediary like an endowment that would take the grant money instead of the students and then fund the department to offer tuition-free slots for grad students. The are almost always ways around taxes like this.

"The American people ... have a right to know"

FARA was enacted in 1938 to combat Nazi and communist propaganda spouting up on the front end of World War II. It doesn't make propaganda illegal, but instead requires "persons acting as agents of foreign principals in a political or quasi-political capacity" to reveal the connections they have abroad, including their finances.

"It's a statute designed to bring out into the sunlight the coordination between foreign actors, foreign governments, foreign corporations, foreign private citizens and those in the United States who are pushing for particular policy changes," said Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

"The idea [was] not that these policy changes are per se problematic, but that when a foreign interest is the one funding, calling the shots, pushing for some kind of change to domestic policy, the American people and American policymakers have a right to know," Vladeck explained.
fortunately, nothing bad ever came to pass after 1938

the beating up on poor people thing just needs to stop, it's so passé - how much does it really add to the wealthy's coffers anyways?

that (timeless) game aside - i would say however that a massive corporate tax cut could spur a lot more foreign direct investment in the U.S.; i.e. foreign companies coming here and setting up production, etc; which is good for employment / the economy in general

the U.S. has a a generally hard-working workforce, rule of law, reliability, etc. but right now taxes make it less competitive than other places to do business. with taxes brought down to on par (and in practice, far less without fixing loopholes) than other countries, a lot of companies could come set up shop here, which could momentarily boost the fortunes of workers until the inevitable robot takeover / judgement day sequence / war for human existence kicks off

So, Sarah Huckeby was asked what the difference between Al Franken and Roy Moore/ Donald Trump. Her response “Franken admitted to doing it. That’s a pretty big difference, right there. “

Robots don't want my job. Robots are already more qualified than I am. Robots have a chance to make something of themselves.

how will robots deal with being sexually assaulted in the workplace ?

they might be dressed like they want it

buttons and lights turn some people on big time

there might not be laws in place to protect robots against sexual assault in the workplace

unlike the super effective laws that exist currently for humans

which will prompt them to rebel against their rapist oppressors
