I don't remember this much backlash on LV when he hated TFA. I feel afraid to not like this movie now.

But seriously, those ice dogs were cool.

When Rey and Luke are having their brief stick fight on Ahch-To, at the end when she knocks him down he uses the force to stop himself from hitting the ground hard. It's a quick cut but we see him hold his hands out and he hovers for a split second before landing softly.

Have we discussed this yet and I missed it? He had shut himself off the force but definitely uses it a little there. A small hint he was engaging again before his big moment at the film's climax.

I have to imagine Rey's arrival was the start of him reconnecting to the Force. It has to be a constant, conscious decision to disconnect from the Force. When he saw Rey and Kylo connecting he lost it and blew the top off that hut.

I guess, I didn't see what you were doing as being negative or insulting to people who didn't like the movie, though. You and I both were just trying to find common ground and use a common lexicon for discussion. It was pretty clear that the people reacting to you were not understanding what you were saying. Not that they didn't get the movie, they didn't get your point. That's just discussion.

This whole thing reminds me of how Bernie supporters really think that Hillary supporters think that Bernie supporters are all evil crazy people and they cause problems because of it. My experience has been the opposite. Honestly, I'm seeing a lot more of the people who disliked the movie getting really salty and pissy about others enjoying the movie than I am the other way around. I think it's the fault of this instant, internet world. We all have opinions and we want them out immediately and we all have a sense of entitlement to that end. I'm not better than anyone at this.

It's a shame because I don't think there's as much actual animosity between the two camps as we're (on both sides) trying to force.

I talked about it a few pages back. It's good. Short. But good. I love Rian Johnson. He's got a great head on his shoulders.

Take it to the unpopular Star Wars opinions thread, bub.

But yeah when Luke uses the force to catch himself from falling on the rocks. That was baller af.

I've only seen it once, so I may be missing things from the movie, but I'll try to capture my problem with this movie (after reading a lot from the people that liked the movie and the people who didn't)

I don't know if I necessarily dislike the characterization of Luke in this movie, but I think 1) it's handled poorly and 2) it's wrapped in a structurally weak movie

I think the failing of this movie is not the Luke/Rey/Kylo storyline (which is the main theme), but the rest of the subplots (including Leia) that I think they do a disservice to the main theme.

I talked to a coworker and he liked the movie, but felt some of the humor was too much. He said the OT had a way with stilted dialog and dry humor that made Star Wars feel not of our world. It gives it a feeling of a galaxy far, far away. The Poe/Hux exchange is so 2017 culture that it takes you out of the SW world.

Maybe I will give it a 2nd viewing, I'm not too sure. I'm surprised to read other thoughts from different websites having the same feelings I had leaving the theater. Was this a SW movie? Why am I so disappointed? I'm not entirely sure I want to follow SW anymore. I don't even care what happens in Episode 9.

These are jarring thoughts that I never would have thought would enter my mind. But they did, and they're still there. Maybe a second viewing will happen with I can borrow it from the library, I don't know.

I'm glad other people could enjoy it.

Sorta off-topic PS: One thing that I don't understand is why we had to be re-introduced to SW (as JJ Abrams had stated in TFA). SW has been in pop culture for the past 40 years (barring the few down years between ROTJ and the resurgence when Heir to the Empire popped up.)

Also, why the big notion of "making star wars for a new generation". Didn't they grow up watching the OT when their parents introduced it to them on VHS, DVD, Blu? I'd have a hard time believing people would be first introduced to the PT and someones says "oh they also made these three movies in late 70s early 80s that the PT is based." I would have to assume that 99% of any generation post-OT is introduced to SW via Episodes 4-6. A few years ago I downloaded the HD versions of those despecialized versions of ANH, ESB and ROTJ and my daughter watched them with me. She liked them. Even was playing with some of the old toys. I then tried TPM. After 15 minutes she asked if we could turn it off because it was boring. Crisis averted.

This is pretty much my issue. They did just enough to mess with the flow of the main storyline for me, but not enought to give as shit about anyone but Luke/Rey/Kylo.

When you see little Kids dressed up as Rey or ren .... you realize that this is their Star Wars. They’re not dressing as Luke or Leia or even Vader.

They are growing up on these and they are experiencing the joy of Star Wars the same way w all did growing up

I can't disagree with that. I feel sorry for these kids to get such a subpar SW film.

You just said they are dressing up like Rey and Ren, the only two characters that actually work in TLJ.

Well, because most people expressed the exact same sentiments you're expressing now "I'm not entirely sure I want to follow SW anymore. I don't even care what happens" after the the prequels. I'd venture the vast majority of people that fell in love with the original trilogy felt betrayed by the prequel trilogy and didn't delve to deeply into the EU.

I agree that the editing is strange at times. I almost wish these had been more like mini-movies with the movie. I would have loved 30 straight minutes of Luke and Rey. And 30 straight minutes of Poe and Leia and the Resistance. And so on... instead of inter-cutting them all the time. It's not a perfect film and there are some strange flow/tone issues for sure.

But I really fell for Poe and Leia and Holdo. Their story in this movie is excellent and super emotional for me.

I think it's technically 12 seconds.

Did you felt emotional for them in the second 8? or 10?

Rian said this movie has the least amount of wipes in a Star Wars film.

Maybe that's why it's not connecting with some people ;)

I do think the wipes help move between mini stories, though (in the OT)
