I like what Strat is saying about kids dressing like Rey and Rey. I have seen nothing like it. Every single person in the cinema was probably at least 15. When I go to Marvel movies it’s packed with crazy kids.

But seriously, those ice dogs were cool.
I don’t even hate this movie like I hated TFA. It’s just kinda bland and crappy.
Yeah, I don't think there's anything in TLJ to outright hate, but you sure don't leave the theater feeling like you've seen a SW film.

That's the problem with the prequels - they sound amazing but then you watch them. I just finished a graphic novel for the prequels and they have a lot of the best parts in them and leave out a lot of the trash so it's a pretty good read. But then they left the "sand is rough" speech in verbatim among others. Eh.

What do you think of the new characters? Do you care about them? Love them? Think their story is engaging?
I cared more about the characters in Rogue One at the end of that movie, than I do about Poe, Finn, Rey and Rose so far.

I always felt they were getting too much criticism, probably a bit how the TLJ crowd is feeling now. But the very worst parts of ep 1 and 2 are inexcusable for a SW movie.

I care very much about the new characters. I think Finn was underutilized in The Last Jedi a bit. But I still cared what happened to him. I still felt my stomach twist into knots when I thought he was going to sacrifice himself for the Resistance. My whole body was in a knot when I thought he was going to die.
Poe, who was underutilized in TFA, was outstanding in TLJ. I'm even more invested in him now than ever. Obviously, Rey and Kylo Ren are the big standouts. I'm 100% committed to them and invested in their stories.

blueviper wrote:I don't know if I necessarily dislike the characterization of Luke in this movie, but I think 1) it's handled poorly and 2) it's wrapped in a structurally weak movie
I think the failing of this movie is not the Luke/Rey/Kylo storyline (which is the main theme), but the rest of the subplots (including Leia) that I think they do a disservice to the main theme.
I talked to a coworker and he liked the movie, but felt some of the humor was too much. He said the OT had a way with stilted dialog and dry humor that made Star Wars feel not of our world. It gives it a feeling of a galaxy far, far away. The Poe/Hux exchange is so 2017 culture that it takes you out of the SW world.
Maybe I will give it a 2nd viewing, I'm not too sure. I'm surprised to read other thoughts from different websites having the same feelings I had leaving the theater. Was this a SW movie? Why am I so disappointed? I'm not entirely sure I want to follow SW anymore. I don't even care what happens in Episode 9.
These are jarring thoughts that I never would have thought would enter my mind. But they did, and they're still there. Maybe a second viewing will happen with I can borrow it from the library, I don't know.
Some good thoughts here.

Thank you. I wonder if this will change for me when viewing again. I loved the interplay between Rose and Finn, and Rose is probably my favorite of the four. Driver puts on the best acting performance in the movie. Hard to care for the villain though.

Im okey with Kylo and Rey.
Finn and Poe are jokes to me. Rose even less than that.

I get what you're saying about caring for the villain. A lot of people probably share that with you. But I actually tend to like villains when they're handled they way this franchise in handling Kylo Ren. I never cared much for The Emperor or Snoke or even Vader honestly. But I'm really invested in Kylo. Villains can be the most rewarding characters in films, I think.
Rose is also a really great addition to the franchise. She's accessible to the audience and gives us (the audience) a fun in and perspective into the whole Resistance in a way we haven't seen before. I really hope she continues to grow in 9. I really liked her a lot. And she's pivotal to Finn's growth.

Darth Vader was amazing, but not in a caring for way. In that sense I care more about what happens to Kylo. He has a lot to live up to in being the dread of the galaxy like Vader was, however he is a lot more human.
Yes, I’m interested in seeing where they go next with Finn and Rose. Do think they could have done more for us to engage with them though.

I’m struggling to connect with Rey. Feel the acting is flat, and probably the material has some of the blame. I should be really excited at the end of the movie wondering what will happen to her, but there is no tension, no cliffhanger, no what happens next. Anyway, she will probably win in the end.

Have we discussed this yet and I missed it? He had shut himself off the force but definitely uses it a little there. A small hint he was engaging again before his big moment at the film's climax.
Yeah I saw that. I think it’s kind of a link to leias inate force ability protecting her in the explosion. She takes a deep breath before it hits.

ONE thing this film does really really well is sets it up so you can openly root for the villain. Kylos situation at several points is such that he’s vulnerable and you can see his pain. I think he’s being totally honest with rey in the force Skype sessions. Especially when you realise it’s him she’s talking to when recounting her cave experience. She’s come around to trusting him by Luke’s constant rejection of her. And maybe he mainuplates that.
Drivers performance is just so fully inhabited and subtle yet powerful.
Best villain in all Star Wars ever. Certainly the best performance of one.

i adore the new principles (rey, kylo, poe, and Finn). i think they are magnetic, and I think i prefer them to the OT prime characters (and certainly over their end of career versions though ford and especially hamil have given excellent performances)
bb8 was a bit too chopper in this film, but far less repulsive than R2 in the prequels. i should point out that the kids in my showing adored him
where the OT has a clear advantage is in the richness of the supporting characters. ive enjoyed DJ and Holdo (and snoke in tlj) but thats been it. this may be because the OT characters are taking up that real estate, at least in part.

What moment is it that makes Luke snap out of his funk?
I don’t think it’s rey leaving.
I think it’s when he reaches out to Leia and he realises she’s been injured and in pain.
Or is it a series of things?

I 100% agree with this. I still think it would have been much more interesting if Rey sided with him. I was shipping that relationship so hard.

Not gonna lie I think it would have been a better way to go even temporarily. It would force Luke’s band even harder to back and get involved and really throw down against kylo.
