If he said please don't use the masks and save them for the hospitals that's one thing, but what he said was "no you idiots, masks don't work for this. Hospitals need them though to provide care, so don't buy them"

Quick reminder that it was China and the WHO (also China) that insisted there was no evidence of human to human transmission back at the beginning of 2020.

No, he wasn't acting on information. He either didn't know if facemasks had a role and that's what he should have said, or he knew and lied. Either way, saying masks are not needed was a lie or at best a fabrication not based on anything known.

I don't mean to lend any support to what Bi_3 posted, but I 'member when Lancet published that entirely falsified study on Hydroxychloroquine from an entity that claimed to have hospital data from 100s of sites.
So yeah, the gatekeepers fuck up there in very significant ways from time to time.
Published in a medical journal is definitely not sufficient for whatever standard of proof you are aiming for.

Do I think it will easy for those three doctors to get a research paper that simultaneously:
1) indicts China
2) supports a Trump backed narrative
