Drivers performance is just so fully inhabited and subtle yet powerful.
I 100% agree with this. I still think it would have been much more interesting if Rey sided with him. I was shipping that relationship so hard.

Not gonna lie I think it would have been a better way to go even temporarily. It would force Luke’s band even harder to back and get involved and really throw down against kylo.
Yes, that sounds really interesting.

Yes, that sounds really interesting.
Especially as Yoda says to Luke ‘lose Ben Solo we did. Lose the girl Rey we must not’
They kinda missed a trick not mining that.

its the direction i kind of suspected based on the previews - but the way they went put rey and kylo front and center, rather than pawns in luke/snoke’s story. and luke is just not the main character here

True. Rey is arguably. And it would have definitely been a break from tradition if we had seen her go with him and join him at least temporarily (maybe Snoke influences it somehow in her mind?)
And have her snap out of it completely when she’s with kylo on Crait there to kill the rebels?
There’s countless ways they could have done it and brought her back.

Just on Rose.
One thing I noticed. Her writing is actually pretty great.
Her line about not killing what you hate but protecting what you love?
I think I’m the only one noticed but it’s a turn on WB Yates poem ‘an Irish airman foresees his death’ (and she almost dies in a plane)
‘Those I fight I do not hate, those I guard I do not love’

But it would have added a layer to her frustration with Luke. Would have broken the trope of incorruptible Jedi, and given her an extra dimension. Literally everyone else in the film fails and is redeemed except her.

its a great line - feels slightly unearned. rose and finn has some scenes cut. wonder if it would have strengthened that moment
john boyega is magnificent in the moments when he is making his suicidal assault

but what logic sees her joining snoke or even the first order. she is there to bring ben back, not join him

I kinda wish they’d let him die. You’d have backlash no doubt but his character earns it in that moment. I’ve had it with these guys. What they did to my life. I’m gonna give my life to stop them.
The. I guess it would have been lost in Luke’s death shortly after so who knows

yeah - one main character death at a time

It wouldn’t be that in the story wher she joins him. Little tweaks could have her go to save him but let no good deed go unpunished and he manages to turn her.

Yeah I was hoping for a version of this where Rey kept Kylo from going full dark and they teamed up to do their own thing. And that would have been consistent with both characters.
But what we got may ultimately end up being far more powerful.

So, Warwick Davis was that short greedy casino creature.
And Gareth Edwards was a fighter in the trenches on Crait

i enjoyed the movie, but i'm by no means an invested Star Wars fan. i just take consume them as entertaining movies.
but, laura dern completely took me out of the Star Wars universe. she's far too recognizable for the role, and i couldn't get past thinking, "oh, that's fucking laura dern". what i always enjoy/enjoyed about Star Wars was the universe they created was unique bc you usually didn't recognize any of the actors. and because of that, they were able to create this world you could believe in, and lose yourself in. with her suddenly appearing on screen, i just felt, "oh yeah, this is just a hollywood movie."
