It's a great movie. A New Hollywood character drama that happened to become a huge hit. Avildsen's direction is a little flat, but the performances, the casting, the writing, the music...it's a KNOCKOUT!Kaius wrote:The first Rocky is a masterpiece.
How did Rocky V get such a high ranking?LoathedVermin72 wrote:I marathoned the Rocky series over the last two days. I liked all of them (I'd seen them all before, but it had been many years since I last saw 2-5). I enjoyed them all, but here's how I'd rank them:

2. Rocky Balboa
3. V
4. III

Ha, I figured someone would bring that up. I appreciated its decided return-to-roots approach. While I liked 2-4, I think they strayed from the character drama that made the original great, and became much more boxing movie. V tried to get back (though not entirely successfully) to what made the first work. It's essentially a layered father/son drama with boxing as an undercurrent. Hell, it doesn't even have a climactic boxing scene; instead, we get a gritty street fight! I liked the change in formula.Rangi Guy wrote:How did Rocky V get such a high ranking?LoathedVermin72 wrote:I marathoned the Rocky series over the last two days. I was worried that Rocky was going to box with a robot, based on these posts. I'm just glad that didn't happen. None of these movies are bad, and all are very watchable. They just keep getting weirder.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Good luck with the robot, Argo
Yes, they are definitely very watchable. All six films were exceedingly easy to watch back-to-back.The Argonaut wrote:I was worried that Rocky was going to box with a robot, based on these posts. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
