News is that Will Smith's mother was as shocked as anyone by the SLAP, and apologized to Rock on behalf of her grown ass adult child.

“He is a very even, people person," she told ABC Philadelphia affiliate WPVI. "That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime... I’ve never seen him do that."

Was waiting for that dude to name drop Cobra Kai.

It’s great for him that he was able to neutralize his bullies by assaulting them back, but there are less aggressive ways to accomplish the same outcome, so that doesn’t justify his violence or Will’s. Especially when it’s just words from the bully (and then there’s a whole other discussion about framing comedians as bullies).

Of interest, Rock was on Carvey and Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast not long ago, and they discuss at length Rock’s history with being bullied and the therapy he underwent to come to terms with it.

After much thought, I'm revisiting my opinion on this a bit. I no longer think that a slap was Will's duty after that look that Jada gave him. Free speech and all. Will should have handled this better.

I'll double down on thinking it's ridiculous to call the slap anything but a slap though, and I'm still very much in agreement that Chris Rock was correct not to press charges.

I think it was made pretty clear that Harmless and the like pretty much just hate Rock's style of comedy, or maybe even comedy in general. But to think it calls for physical violence is still bat shit in my mind. It's like, man... all the times I've actually been irritated or even felt somewhat threatened by someone's behavior... to just walk up and slap them in the face? Jesus fucking christ how can anyone think this is OK?

I agree that Will Smith had a whole host of other options at his disposal I don't feel comfortable saying the guy in the Facebook post had other options as a kid. Sometimes your only option is to fight back. Of course there can be consequences to fighting back. There could have been a very different outcome when he hit the kid with a metal lunch box. Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't. Life.

There is a world of difference between having to defend yourself on the playground and marching on stage to slap famous comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars

He definitely deserves at least the amount of respect and reverence it takes to not get smacked in the face.

it's funny, we decry events like the Oscars because they're full of robots with money who act according to a script, and never with vulnerability and flawed humanity, never with reality, off the cuff and in the movement

but when they do, we suddenly decide we preferred the robots actually, and start lending these big rich TV galas a level of sacred ceremonial respect that we wouldn't have dreamed of before

that is what's baffling to me
