i forgot about that. I like this more because the art feels more closely tied into the songs, as opposed to a being a bunch of pictures created for the album.

It's hard to tell how closely the images relate until we have the songs, though. On the Backspacer pics, we have the woman amongst the waves, we have Johnny Guitar and lots'a women he be havin', etc... The MYM artwork ties in pretty closely to the song, I guess we'll have to wait to see the Lightning Bolt artwork. At the moment I'm not sure how strongly the LB lyrics are tied.

mym is pretty close, and FD seems to be but I don't really know those lyrics.

The word metaphysics is formed from the Greek meta ta phusika, a title which, about the year A.D. 70, was related by Andronicus of Rhodes to that collection of Aristotelean treatises which since then goes by the name of the "Metaphysics". Aristotle himself had referred to that portion of philosophy as "the theological science", because it culminated in the consideration of the nature of God, and as "first philosophy", both because it considered the first causes of things, and because, in his estimation, it is first in importance.

OK, so psychologically / spiritually beyond the physical. That's cool. I only used "God" as shorthand for something "other" than the physical / scientific / evolutionary, because I didn't think Ed even believed in anything beyond that. It doesn't destroy the song, obviously, I just was a bit like huh? To include the word "redeemed" alongside "metaphysically", made me think of God. Does he need something beyond the physical to redeem him? Most agnostics / atheists don't.

It certainly doesn't just mean "God" regarding metaphysical poetry, but God usually features.

Metaphysics is a set of views which permits mysticism and transcendence in place of hard evidence and empirical data. It's a sort of a pre-science, that has the same goals - learning about the surrounding world and ourselves - but differs in its methods and instruments.

This clearly represents the fact that Apollo 11 was on the moon for six hours before Neil Armstrong stepped out and became the first man to walk on it. For five full hours the crew had remained safe inside their spaceship, and near the end of the sixth they took a very dangerous risk.

You will note that the gray-scaled fish in Swallowed Whole (a term for, among other things, obsession) also seems awfully similar to the actual surface of the moon. The fish imagery is probably a reference to the astronaut's landing on the Sea of Tranquility, while the flaming globe indicates the entire world's fixation on what was about to occur.

Lastly, Mind Your Manners as a title seems a call back (the video even acknowledges this) to the era in which the race to the moon occurred. As a song, Mind Your Manners laments the possibility that we may not find the answers to our greatest questions even as we lift ourselves up higher (the moon, natch).

Based almost entirely on this artwork that the band probably offered negligible input on, and which may have even been made by a person who had not actually heard the songs for which he was making pictures, I'd say you have to be an idiot not to assume that this is a concept album about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin straight up boning in a teeny little ship while they wait for the video feed to start working better so they can open the door.

Although, of course, I can't comment on just how Lightning Bolt fits into this until we can confirm the rumor that the accompanying picture is going to be just a giant spurting phallus.

The sirens pic is kinda phallic tbh. It's transmitting good lovin as evidenced by the hearts.
