3.28 million new unemployment claims last week.
At the height of the Great Recession it was 700 something thousand.

It will be an Easter miracle when Trump reopens the economy in two weeks and everyone gets their job back.

I feel very fortunate that my wife and I are both in industries where our jobs seem secure (for now).

“Stocks go up while millions of people lose their jobs and the very rich insist that human lives are a fair sacrifice for keeping megamansions afloat” is a stupendous way to convince all those young people that capitalism is the best they can be offered. Bang up job all around.

Yeah, for a lot of young people the only good economic news for some time will be government mandated debt relief, federal income replacement spending, and social programs. Meanwhile, the people telling them to put their lives at risk for stonks are the same people telling them they’re foolish to be suspicious of capitalism.

If I were one of the people bothered by the generational divide on the subject of capitalism, I would be absolutely mortified by the language the president and organizations like the Wall Street Journal are using.

Same here... for now.

One thing I hope comes out of this is a re-prioritization of spending/consumption in our society. We are literally dying from the folly of a globalized supply chain and all of these things we used to value... from sneakers to sports cars are now reveled to be the shallow fantasies of youth and void of worth and meaning.

Oh to live in a world where 20-somethings’ love of cars and shoes were the principle driver of and primary risk focus for global supply chains.

Also, I hope this sheds light on a few others mistakes as well:

1.) cultural opposition to multi-generational households
2.) "dorm room style" hyper-dense urban living
3.) open borders

When this mess is finally over and Trump is well into his second term this will be the new vessel that border security is delivered in. KEEP VIRUSES OUT!! Hell, he might build two walls.

All you Trump voters can eat a fucking dick. He owns a large part of this because the market players read actual news and know he has bungled this thing since December.
That's kinda ridiculous. Shutting down the economy wrecks the economy. Who knew?

And where has there been an effective response, especially one that hasn't wrecked the economy? Maybe South Korea? Japan? And that has more to do with culture than anything.

I think Trump has done a shit job in a lot of ways, but I don't see any scenario where the economy wasn't gonna get wrecked in the response. No country has been able to avoid either the disease or the economic damage.
