This is tough. There are times when I don't think Jon can hang. He admits to not being on par with the Halfhand despite having killed him, which puts him in a league below some of the all time elite fighters of Westeros. But I also feel like, without a lot of direct evidence, he improves by the time he's named Lord Commander. But does he improve enough?

i actually agree with this but i think his b*stard strength is the deciding factor

Mance Rayder gives Jon all he can handle in the training yard. Not that this is the bottom line, but it must be indicative of his skill level. Granted, Longclaw is an immediate upgrade, and Jon was caught off guard. I still think what Syrio did against Trant and his posse is almost up there with what Oberyn did against the Mountain in terms of impressive feats.

Agreed. It's going to take me a little while to make up my mind here.

Did we ever see Syrio fight anyone worth a damn? He seemed like a really good fighter, but he gets killed by Meryn Fucking Trant.
