I'm beginning to love this thing. Reflektor, Here Comes The Night Time, Normal Person, Joan Of Arc, Awful Sound, It's Never Over and Afterlife are all fantastic. The rest ranges from good to very good and some songs are still growing.

Joan of Arc had parts I liked but the Joan of Arc chorus really hurts that song for me.


Normal person just annoyed me. After X number of albums I usually like to see people moving away from those sorts of lyrical themes.

This really struck me as an album you need to be an AF fan (maybe even a big one) to appreciate. Bracketing whether or not the songs are good enough to age well (impossible to say right now) they demand a lot from the listener. Not that they are difficult songs per se (I don't think this is a difficult album in the way that, say Kid A is difficult), but that they demand a great deal of trust, even a certain suspension of disbelief, from the listener to work. if you're already sold on the product before you buy it this is easy. you want to believe, and so it's easier to do so and If you're not, you spend the whole listen struggling with whether or not you should. All of this is independent of whether or not the song takes you someplace you find worthwhile

one of the songs reminded me of the music in parts of a clockwork orange--what the 1970s thought the future would sound like. I'm still waiting for someone else to notice that.

Just seems like they were chasing a certain creative muse with this album. I don't think they're trying to make any grand gestures by doing so. That's just up to the media and the fanbase to decide. I don't think they'd even argue that it can sound a bit self indulgent. They seem to be a pretty humble band in their interviews. Very likeable guys. I'm just not a huge fan of this style of music. I'll keep listening though, they've earned it from me at least.

Normal Person sounds just glorious to me from 2 minutes onwards especially the bridge sung be the girls and the ending after that. I could understand thinking that strange riff to be annoying.

arcade fire strikes me as a band that only thinks in terms of gestures. I don't mean that in a bad way. I would say the same thing about bruce springsteen, u2, or pearl jam (although I wish they were more intentional about it)/

What's the message? I haven't focused on the lyrics yet.

To me, it's that humanity tends to defend some of the worst kinds of oppressions and hatreds as "normal", while making "others" of people who don't fit the mould. The song is against the idea of being part of that "normal" category, if it means that everything else becomes "abnormal".
