For years we've all been wondering what happens next. Well, apparently exactly what happened before happens next.

It's not the Empire, it's the First Order (even though they're exactly the same)! Also, don't worry about how they came to power after the defeat of the Empire. Doesn't matter, just go with it! Also, the defeat of the empire was meaningless.

I haven't seen this yet but I feel like I'm going to be closer to LV than to strat on this one.

In fairness you seem like you wanna hate it before you've seen it, for hat ever reason.

I haven't actually talked very much about this so not sure where you're getting that. It's just I'm the type of person that gets annoyed when something is just a pandering rehash of an old story.

Also, I've always really liked the OT, but I've never been a star wars fanboy. So I don't feel like I have an emotional disposition to this either way.

This could go on forever. I don't think anyone has any illusions that this wasn't basically a remake of ANH with nods to ESB and ROTJ. It didn't lessen the enjoyment of the movie at all for me.

I was suddenly jolted out of Star Wars for that part.

With as big as the Star Wars Universe is, though, there is so much potential for new or even tangent storylines from the original. Copying the original just seems a little lazy and/or pandering.

For one movie I'm ok with it. Hopefully the next two will branch off and do their own thing.

i do wonder how much the rehashing of so many of the OT plot points will bother me as time goes on. right now, it only bothers me a little, with minimal impact on my enjoyment of the thing. we'll see if that changes.

My biggest concern about this too.

Seeing our favourite characters again after all these years. Feels.


How much longevity does that have?

Will this still be a great film when the trilogy is over?

admittedly, while watching the attack on the starkiller base scene i was surprised that they went that route so specifically again, and found it completely anti-climatic. as it was transpiring, i was hoping for a twist.. that the attack would fail or just something different. it was a little bit of a let down there.

God I hate this argument. I like ESB and ROTJ more than The Godfather anyway.

but why do people criticize this movie for not being something that it never was or never intended to be? it's like saying south park's animations suck compared to a Pixar movie. yes there are plot holes. yes the dialogue can be corny. and yes the scenes can be predictable as all get out. but that's star wars.

it sounds like your biggest beef is that it's essentially ATH II. if that's it, I think it's a fair criticism. but any of the other criticisms could probably be said about the original trilogy.

No, that's far from the biggest criticism. It just isn't any good. The originals were not merely exposition dumps with disposable characters, bad performances, and dull action scenes. All nuance and atmosphere has been sacrificed. Passion has been replaced with laziness. Creativity and imagination have been co-opted by imitation and iconography porn. New ideas have been subsumed by fanboy genuflection.

But, hey, it's just a dumb sci-fi movie! Don't worry about it!

I'm pretty sure in the next one Luke will have to go off on his own to further his training, only to abandon that training when his friends are betrayed by someone they thought they could trust. Also, someone will fall into a sarlacc pit and then 30 years later whoever owns the rights to the franchise will say he magically survived so they could use him in episode 14.

I don't really see the 3 mains as disposable characters or poorly acted at all. I felt the action scenes had significance and weight to them, especially the blaster fire and lightsaber fight at the end.

how much of this do you think was disney wanting to make sure they brought as many people back on board as possible for this thing? all the nostalgia/plot-rehashing safely and firmly locks in all the existing nerds, and the new faces/bb8 get the new generation hooked. now going forward, we have everyone along for the ride, which will hopefully go in some new and interesting directions.

I give it a solid 5/10. Basically a remake. Some big moments landed with a thud. The new characters were good though.
