It's all about themes echoing, rhyming and poetry.
Anyone in any family sees the same disaster unfold with the following generation.
This is just that

The worst thing about this movie is that it renders the previous films meaningless. Everything is reset so they can shit out the same story again. The Empire is still the Empire, The Rebels are still rebels, Han and Leia aren't a thing anymore, farmboy (girl) has to go find a mysterious hermit. Nothing changed. Its all so pointless.

I hate when sequels ruin the previous movies.

I never thought the universe was that rigidly defined at all. This is lock step. I'm not saying it doesn't need Jedi or storm troopers, but fuck, ANOTHER Death Star? Jesus.
I would be ok with another death star, but to destroy it in the same exact manner? With another x-wing trench run? come on..

The only thing worse than when the most cynical attitude is taken toward an audience is when they say "thank you."

yeah this isn't similar storytelling language. This is note for note the same. Even the characters seemed utterly bored by it. Why should I be impressed when the people in the movie don't give a shit ?

So you feel there aren't other stories worth telling in this universe?
Yes - and they are coming. But this one had to come first and the similarities are fine/often thematically important

Okay - give me a list of the familiar beats that bothered people. I'll respond point by point later (and I may agree on some. I just saw this and haven't had time to reflect

Expect this email early next year:

"Our new album is called Ten. Careful listeners will find several thematic similarities with past works. Reserve a copy via http://www.pearljam.com and we guarantee you won't get it until well after the release date."

These overly familiar pearl jam posts in response to complaints about overly familiar Star Wars moments is excellent meta posting commentary

I mean... like... all of it. Every thing. All the beats.

Except maybe Finn's story I guess? Or is he the Princess Leia this time around? They seemed to split Luke into two characters.

Would any of these people have a problem if pearl jam recorded a new album that was ten or yield or no code type songs, just slightly tweaked?

I think not

You mean how all of their "anthems" since Yield have been a tweaked version of Given to Fly? Yeah, we've been bitching about that for a decade now.
