Well that was a lighthearted reply to your jab about being an anti-Spenno. My point was clarified in that post to Orson. I'm saying that as a critic and a student and an audience member, I tend to prefer to frame my criticism in terms of what I liked about something, or what worked, rather than what was bad or what didn't work.

Doesn't mean that there aren't things that I really dislike, or even hate, and find zero value in. Like I've said before, there's nothing of value in Gummo. It's awful. AWFUL.

Then there's something like The Thin Red Line, which I dislike, but I can see, as a critic, that there is merit there. I just had a specific emotional response to the movie despite all that's accomplished and good about it. I don't like the movie and that's something I can't help.

I feel like I've spent a lot of words in this thread saying what you already know and understand.

I don't know how saying you're the anti-Spenno is a jab at all. I get frustrated at Spenno a lot.

And by implication you get frustrated at me, a lot. There's the jab.

If you mean what I think you mean you're wrong, but I'll take it!
But seriously folks, isn't enjoying yourself more fun than not?
yes. precisely my thought.

Did I miss something here? Since when can't hating something also be enjoyable? I take great pleasure in hating Family Guy and Zack Snyder.

different kind of joy. can be a little more soul sucking. also, joy-hate is usually less rational than joy-love.

I totally disagree. I think joy-hate is generally more technical and well thought out, whereas joy-love can be "It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside!" nonsense.

Also, scathing reviews of terrible movies are way better to read than reviews of good movies.

Definitely.

Even more enjoyable again: scathing reviews of things I really enjoy.

Agreed. "The Fountain" got some pretty nasty reviews and I loved reading every one of them.

Blow Out (1981)

I liked this a lot. Travolta gave a great performance. And I love the devotion to sound, much like The Conversation.

Although, De Palma has a knack for outdating his movies by putting in the worst soundtrack music. It's usually during the suspense scenes. I feel the same way about The Untouchables.

Funny, we watched Blow Out a few weeks ago.

Great film, I really dug it.
