I listened to a maybe half in the way work, and i liked it but why the female vocals? They really put the songs down.

it has to do with how the album came about and the relationship to the film that mike mills made.
in a nutshell, he went to the band right before sleep well beast came out and wanted to do a video. that turned into about 5-6 minute long short film. the band had about 4-5 songs written that were left over from the sleep well beast sessions (you can figure out which ones they were). the film then turned into what it is now. to compliment it, the band had the songs sung from different perspectives -- outward looking in (which is really the first time matt's done that). a lot of them are conversations between male and female characters. and so that's why you have the songs sung with so many female vocals.

so far here's my ranking of the "non-filler" songs:
so far so fast
oblivions
the pull of you
quiet light
where is her head
rylan
hey rosey
light years
so had your soul with you
i am easy to find
hairpin turns
roman holiday
not in kansas

OK, so I closed the door to my office and started watching the short film.. I got about 8 minutes into it and started tearing up so I had to turn it off... maybe I'll watch it later with the wife.. Either something is wrong with me lately or this shit is very moving...

First listen and I’m in love. I’m totally blown away, this has captured me immediately waaaaaaaay more than the last two albums.

I am also really enjoying this the more I listen. I am a big fan of Matt's singing on this, I think the guests complement him well, highlight what he does well, and I wouldn't be surprised if they inspired him to really go for it on some songs. It's also refreshing for a band I really like yo try something really new, to actually experiment and be surprising.
We've spent years on this board wishing that Pearl Jam would do something new, to "experiment," but it's so hard to imagine what something like that would be like--taking 1/3 of the vocals away from your lead singer certainly qualifies as something bold, I think.

Yeah, for sure, but that's what I'm sort of getting at--very happy The National moved to try something so radically different instead of pumping out a very similar album to the one that came out less than 2 years ago.

Agree...the band is awesome. Shit I also loved El Vy! Wish they'd put out another album.
