Edit: what’s the point in society maintaining a concept of gender if there are 100+ variations?

This is obviously off-the-charts ridiculous, but even so, who fucking cares? Why is someone's gender identification so important to you? You're always on some trip about this and I just don't get it. Nobody is asking you to identify differently, so why does it matter so much? None of this is harming you in any way.

I have absolutely misgendered people, friends and strangers, to others and to their faces, and have yet to be "cancelled." It's pretty easy to own up to the mistake, apologize, and move on. And it's pretty disingenuous to conflate "refusal to go along" (which is at best just needlessly fucking rude) with a "simple mistake."

Why does it matter? Because refusal to go along with it or even making a simple mistake gets you tarred and feathered as a transphobe, and can have very real consequences to both individual's careers, society and institutions.

This is about power, and language games are tremendously powerful tools.

It's a Byzantine social etiquette (not a good thing), and like any form of etiquette, it is designed specifically to divide.
I'm sure people were saying the same things when those darned coloreds wanted to use the same bathrooms as whitey. Or when those darn gays wanted to get married to each other. News flash Burt, showing people respect and empathy is never going to ruin anyone's career. It's never going to destroy an institution, and if it does, that institution should be destroyed.

Your argument is, plain and simple, "the world/society is changing in ways I don't like/understand, so I don't want that change to happen." My bleeding liberal heart bleeds for your suffering.

It's pretty easy to navigate, actually.

Just let people be people.

This idea that someone's preferred pronoun is somehow sooooo pervasive in today's society is complete nonsense.

You probably see a transgender person once a month (at the most) and actually interact with a transgender person once a year (at the most).

How in the world could that so discomfort your fat, white life that you would rant endless in an online forum?

So much to unpack here, coming from the angriest, most aimlessly judgmental person on RM.
I just don't like you.

Get over it, dipshit.

I'm not conflating them. I'm pointing out two different things, (neither of which are unforgivable offences, or even offences at all) that can have the same consequences.

And I don't give a shit about rudeness. Again: etiquette.
Lmao you massive dipshit. You are conflating them, because they're two different things with different consequences and one of them *is* an offense.

R2D is generally an unhinged lunatic but he's also exactly right in this thread/about transgender issues more broadly.

What a humiliating thing
I don't think it's humiliating, though it's telling that you interpreted this as an attempt at humiliation. I do think though that if you have any experience with third gender people, you realize the singular they feels weird in the mouth for a little bit maybe and then becomes totally normal. It's not nearly as difficult as far-right shut-ins like Burt make it out to be.

I would counter that R2D's bile is truly aimless and random, whereas Burt's always sides with the poor straight man who just can't figure out this pronoun thing (and also has put zero effort into doing so).
