You're a very worthy opponent, friend.
yeah I hate that we are matched up this first round. Probably the two best teams in the tourney.
eh I disagree on that
let us have this moment, chud
I actually think you're two of the weakest teams in the tournament. For me your matchup pretty much came down to Here Comes My Girl vs Time To Move on

You can't turn me into a company man.
Time to move on is far better than here comes my girl. Listen again.
It's close.

Ruddo:
Songs I Already Know: Here Comes My Girl (very good), The Last DJ (great)
New Songs: "It's Good to Be King" was great! I was already loving it, but that piano section at the end caught me by surprise and really bowled me over. Ooh, "Casa Dega" is killer too! I think Ruddo and I have similar taste in Petty. "Luna" - another midtempo, melancholy, atmospheric number that totally does it for me. Ah, and now we get to finish with a soaring, uplifting song in "Dogs on the Run". This is a killer batch of songs; not a dud in the bunch. Great team.
Overall: Excellent
Strat:
Songs I Already Know: Have Love Will Travel (very good), Into the Great Wide Open (very good)
New Songs: Well, immediately, "Love is a Long Road" is much worse than any song on Ruddo's team. Yeesh, this sounds like total '80s cheese, and not in an appealing way. I don't like this at all. I like the synth-driven soundscape underneath "Time to Move On", but I don't love the rest of the song. The two elements seem badly mismatched. "Climb That Hill" is aggressively forgettable. "Travelin'" - really, Strat? Did you even try to have a shot at winning this?
Overall: Weak
VOTE FOR: Ruddo

doug rr:
Songs I Already Know: American Girl (great), Breakdown (very good), Even the Losers (good)
New Songs: "A Woman in Love" has a good chorus but middle-of-the-road verses. I really like the lyrics in "Southern Accents", but, unfortunately, I can't say the same for the music. Wow, "Crawling Back to You" is super good. Looks like I need to listen to Wildflowers, because most of the tracks I'm hearing from it are great. I love all the subtle idiosyncrasies in the instrumentation and playing here.
Overall: Good
Joey:
Songs I Already Know: Mary Jane's Last Dance (my favorite Petty song), Runnin' Down a Dream (good)
New Songs: "Only a Broken Heart" is really nice. Another great use of production on a Wildflowers track. I love "Saving Grace"! I didn't expect such recent Petty to be so good. "Angel Dream (No. 2)" is just okay. An inoffensive, unremarkable acoustic track. "Room at the Top" is good. Starts out slowly, but really picks up once it all kicks in around 1:30. Nice lyrics.
Overall: Very Good
VOTE FOR: Joey
---
Self:
Songs I Already Know: Listen to Her Heart (good)
New Songs: "Change of Heart" is meh. Sounds like an attempt at a "hit" song, but it's subpar and lacking in memorable hooks compared to his actual big hits. "Jammin' Me" - ugh, this team is gonna be Strat 2.0, isn't it? Yikes, this is terrible. "Square One" is all right; I've definitely heard it before. "The Same Old You" - ugh, yep, Strat 2.0. "Out in the Cold" - oh my god, what is wrong with you?
Overall: Weak
chud:
Songs I Already Know: You Don't Know How It Feels (great)
New Songs: "Walls (Circus)" - ehhhh, I don't think I like this one. I hate the instrumentation and production. Seems like they went overboard and made it sonically overstuffed. Sounds like a mess. "Cabin Down Below" is...okay. "Kings Road" is...also okay...at best. "Don't Fade on Me" is better than these other songs have been, but still not fantastic or anything. "To Find a Friend" is probably best of this team (except for YDKHIF, of course), but I still don't love it. Actually, it just lost some points for that awful piano solo.
Overall: Weak
VOTE FOR: chud
Ruddo's and Joey's teams absolutely dominated this round. It was kind of pathetic.

I was going to tell him to listen to Wildflowers in its entirety but if he's not impressed with Cabin Down Below, Don't Fade On Me, and To Find A Friend then I'm not sure it's even worth it.

I've already heard half of it from this round alone.

It's not my fault you two have terrible taste. At least Ruddo and Joey can be trusted.

I think Ruddo and Joey will come in here and also tell you that you are wrong about Wildflowers and most things

I've always loved Travelin' because it feels like a Willburys B Side

Yes, that's the kind of song you should pick for a best-of tournament, for sure.
