I just finished watching "The Best of Enemies", a documentary about the political debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley during the 1968 political conventions. Absolutely fascinating stuff.

The strange thing is, although I'd consider myself a very liberal person much more in line with Vidal's thoughts and opinions, I ended the doc sympathising and relating more to Buckley. Vidal just comes across as a little more cruel, out to personally attack Buckley in the hopes of getting a rise out of him. When Buckley reacts to Vidal calling him a crypto-Nazi by snapping and calling him a queer and threatening to punch him, its just a sad moment. That infamous moment haunted Buckley for the rest of his life, because he was mortified that he reacted in that manner. On the other hand, Vidal seemed so happy that it happened and carried that happiness for the rest of his life.

Seeing them both at the end of their lives is very sad. Buckley's interview on Charlie Rose where he says he's tired of living and is ready to die...that hit me right in the feels

Buckley died in 2008 and Vidal couldn't resist getting in the last word, penning an essay which ended with "RIP WFB...in hell".

So yeah, this was a great documentary.

Yeah, the 1960s and 1970s in America was a truly turbulent time. So many sad/scary things happening.
