This album has absolutely stolen my heart. On my 6th or 7th listen, I got it even more than before and I cried during WFS and Setting Sun. They really set the controls for the heart of the sun on this thing.

The bluestate recording is actually pretty good for a phone and the people present were mostly quiet during the songs.

The album is great and I want to note an note observation I made, and it's that a big improvement on this over Gigaton is Ed's use of single and 2 syllable words, vs the word salad 3-4 syllable words he was using on Gigaton (words like Dissertations, Conjecture, Despondency, and more)
Just look how powerful and singable the line from Waiting For Stevie is, " You can be loved, by every one, and not feel loved "
Again on Scared of Fear "we use to laugh, we used to sing, we used to dance, we used to believe "
Almost entirely single syllable words. So much better.

The origin of ‘Waiting for Stevie’ is almost too good to be true, in that you and Ed were literally waiting hours for him to show up at your studio to record his parts for a song on Earthling.
We were sitting around with guitars and waiting, and I said, I have this idea. Check it out. He says, that is so fucking weird, because I’ve had this riff for literally years — since albums and albums and albums and albums ago. He showed it to me, and it was almost exactly the same. So, they both kind of melded into each other. We presented that to everyone in the first week, and they all wrote their parts and how the sections would move. It really only became a thing because the thing I showed Ed reminded him of something he’d written that was very similar.

Pretty fun interview
p.s. so much for the "but Watt had to write all the songs for these decrepit old fucks!!" BS narrative

is it just me or is it a mind fuck it's the same production as EV's solo record, like hard to not think of this as EV solo or something.

Sounds like they had fun recording it, and it sounds like it on the record.

that's a really good point
on a related point, I'm glad from what I can tell that these lyrics have some depth but are conceptually simple; Ed has an annoying habit (lol) of overcomplicating his pop song ideas to make them impenetrable

That seems pretty irrelevant when you hear how much Jeff, Stone, Matt and Mike are all over this album

Just to clarify, you’re talking about the cell phone recordings?
I was at the listening party so I heard it in better quality the first time.

People even used to enjoy broadcast tv in black and white.

I hear Pearl Jam. I loved Earthling but I never once felt it sounded like a Pearl Jam record
