Once the shit starts goin' down, it plays everything a little too straight to work like Gremlins, but it also doesn't go "hard" enough with the horror and tries to sorta funny and tongue-in-cheek...while also being kinda serious and scary? It never finds its tone and winds up being a middling blend of opposing sensibilities. It tries to have its cake and eat it too. Too bad, because it had a lot of potential.

If it was any longer it would've worn out its welcome.

But it's this bizarre Lynchian musical oddity. I really enjoyed it. Not sure how much replay value it has. We'll have to wait and see.

No. I really enjoyed it. I think he got exceptional performances out of (what appeared to me to be) mediocre actors. I like how it was filmed. It was street-level and personal when it needed to be, but he incorporated some more grandiose shots as well. There are many, many scenes that resonated with me based on the beauty of the visuals alone. The monsters themselves drove the story but seeing them was not critical to making it interesting or suspenseful.

And that girl was gorgeous.

Scoot McNairy is not a mediocre actor. He's one of my favorites.

I love Scoot, but I could understand why someone would get that impression from Monsters.
