I accidentally discovered an appreciation for MJ's 'Stranger in Moscow'. I can't tell if my taste is worsening or if I'm just starting to value production more than anything in music. Maybe a bit of both.

I decided to at least give Mammoth WVH a listen. I am on the third song and it seems like generic late nineties/ early ‘00s rock music. I can’t really find much to latch on to. Am I missing something?

Yes. You call me in the morning, I'll tell you what to do

Tonight, Tonight us primed us for orchestral post grunge compositions, but Emotion Sickness really drove the trend home when Neon Ballroom came out. Not sure I was ready for it at the time.

Can we name some more instances when the late 90s went full on strings? Metallica S&M comes to mind.

Doing listen through of the first few songs on Neon Ballroom because I just unearthed my old copy.

Spawn (Again) makes me smile so dang much. You will never hear a more look-before-you-leap set of passionate verse delivered out of fucking nowhere on an otherwise graceful and measured set of songs.

People rag on Silverchair for being derivative, but look at it for what it is. These kids struck gold and took every opportunity they had to just put it all out there in the studio on those first three albums. They're nearly more convincing than the source material more often than not.

In my experience, people say that people rag on Silverchair more than I've ever heard anyone rag on Silverchair.

Yeah but you live in NYC, a place where the intercontinental genius of a song like "Freak" is understood on a different level entirely.

What would you guys consider the golden age of music? Mid ‘80s to mid ‘90s?

I ask because I’m on this boat the other day with a large crowd of all ages. Just about everyone knew and danced/sang along to your Whitney Houstons and Guns n Roses (teenagers up through Boomers and beyond). Hell even the Beatles, teenagers today still know their songs.

But then you get into any of the newer stuff, easily 80% of the people on the boat just immediately tune it out and go back to their conversations or sightseeing or whatever.

The staying power of that 80s/90s pop and rock is pretty incredible.

For christ sake they even played Losing My Religion and Runaway Train (back to back!) out by the pool today and even that decidedly-not-party-music got positive response.

The only things I would set a “limit” on I guess would be lyrics in English, and what is most “universally enjoyed”

I love me some of the rap & hip hop during that era, but I don’t see Grandma getting excited about Dre Day or Funkdafied the same way she would about Sweet Child O Mine
