And it was a failure of modern journalistic technique too. It was the day the data died. All of the money poured by a financially challenged media industry into polls and polling analysis was for naught. It profoundly misinformed. It created a compelling and powerful narrative that was the opposite of what was actually happening. There may be few instances, except perhaps under authoritarian regimes, where the media has so successfully propounded a view of events not only of its own making but at such odds with reality. Trump is a simple proof: forget polls — they say what you want them to say.

The whole country should angry about this. Not only did it support Trumps bullshit, it creates a false sense of complacency in voters. I saw a great quote about this earlier: "the media took Trump literally but not seriously and his supporters took him seriously but not literally"

I'm very angry about it. For all of Trump's bullshit, I've been saying the media really is hopelessly corrupt and incompetent for awhile, and now free press itself is endangered.

I liked my hypothetical Bernie response better. But this is what you'd expect/want out of liberal politicians: agree that we're working to fix some of the same problems, let it be known that we're willing to compromise to pass bipartisan legislation. But make it abundantly clear that the most vile of the campaign rhetoric cannot be in the same room as policy, ever.

One thing's for absolute certain: Any hopes from the left that Hispanics will line up behind democrats the way blacks do is a complete pipe dream. Much of that demographic lines up with the Republican platform, and I've met many that are very anti-illegal immigration.

It's going to depend very much on how Trump truly treats them. I've spoken many times on how there's a good chance a generation from now Latinos may assimilate and self-identify more as "white". But that's tougher to do if you keep getting otherized in society.

Many do identify that way now, and I don't think trump can do much to jeopardize that. Immigration isn't the deal breaker many democrats assume it is.

I wonder what the logic is here? Perhaps legals dislike illegals for not "paying their dues"? I don't get it.

Nuance.

One huge problem with Trump's (and, at times, Clinton's) rhetoric about Latinos is that they use the term as if it were a homogeneous group--this goes allllll the way back to Trump's campaign announcement when he talked about the people "Mexico" was sending over, and how he and the media covering him (even critically) simply implied that they were all Mexicans. Latin America is a biiiiiiiiiiiig place, and people are coming in from all over (not to mention Hispanic peoples from the Caribbean). It's similar to the issue when people default to "African American" when discussing black people.

For the love of all that is good, Trump, don't put Christie as AG. That would severely harsh the mellow of one of the rare things many people found good about this election.

I don't smoke, and I don't really care about it as an issue, but I would get a sort of grim satisfaction hearing Trump supporters who support marijuana legalization whine if the Trump justice department cracks down.

For trag and others: here's 538's first attempt to ruminate on why the polls missed in so many states and nationally in this election. It'll take a while for all the pollsters to finish their reviews, but you'll notice some consistent themes: under-sampling, low turnout, and maybe "shy" Trump voters, although it appears that pollsters are split on that last idea. The high uncertainty of the election--with so many voters attaching themselves to minor parties at points and being undecided at others--probably also played a role.
